I think that really is why it's so memorable, cos they are not on a bed. It's a great mental image though isn't it? Very hot!

Also it stands out because to the best of my knowledge (and please correct me if I'm wrong) this is THE ONLY time the term "making love" is used in the EU to describe what has occurred between characters. Yes, there are plenty of implied sexy time moments and fade to blacks between various couples, where you pretty much know that something has happened, but you have to read between the lines. This is as blatant as it gets. So, to those that say Han and Leia never have sex, they actually have the only 100% guaranteed sex in the whole of the EU. No reading between the lines required. So there!!!!claire1976https://www.blogger.com/profile/04285049568087268653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4591963962547240042.post-38954454996275302342012-03-12T13:00:04.819-05:002012-03-12T13:00:04.819-05:00Just re-read page 112 again. I totally laughed at the "Leia-2, Hutt-0" reference. Too funny! I remember growing very tired of the "Leia needs to train as a Jedi" crap that goes on for two decades of books before she finally does train. Geesh. And because basically as fans we rather like the idea of them getting hot and heavy, am I right? I remember reading that line in the book shop back in the 90s and almost dropping the book! I wasn't going to buy the book due to them being apart and it looking pretty dull, but I had to simply because of that one moment!

Yeah we will definitely need more than a week to read something like Star by Star I think. That's a thick one!

Enjoy Apocalypse!claire1976https://www.blogger.com/profile/04285049568087268653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4591963962547240042.post-27233375638276451382012-03-12T08:35:58.612-05:002012-03-12T08:35:58.612-05:00I honestly wonder if I only remember that one line...I honestly wonder if I only remember that one line about the rug because of the line itself or because literally there is just nothing else worth remembering about the book. I read it when it first came out as well. Agree that NJO has some great Han and Leia moments and really even the more recent books all tend to have some quotable lines between them even if the overall books I'm not a huge fan of. They're finally the couple I would've expected them to turn out to be. Only took being married for like 25 years.

For a review on Apocalypse, I don't know. Probably general reactions but I feel like we might want to save the full on review for when we get to it in our EU book club timeline (what, nine months from now or something at the rate we're going?) but we hadn't really talked about it yet.

We usually read one book per week, reviews on Sundays. We may hit some longer books later on that we'll give ourselves an extra week for, but we'll see. And as stated, no old EU books for the next week or two while we read the new one. I can't wait for tomorrow!Zyrahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04860113813294303312noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4591963962547240042.post-82061974597394483192012-03-12T08:09:02.432-05:002012-03-12T08:09:02.432-05:00Welcome Lis. I agree with Claire there are some really good H/L moments in many of the later NJO. The one that comes to mind immediately is Rebel Stand.
On to the book review. Nice review. I feel bad that I did not get to re-read this book in time for the review. I'm not sure of what the time frame is for book reviews? Is it one week or two? I did read this a few months back as well as when it first came out in 1997. I was a new mommy then. The only thing I remember even from way back, is the white fur rug. That one sentence alone left a lasting impression. I couldn't even remember what book I had read it in until I re-read this a few months back. Definitely a missing moment we all would like to read about. Don't remember much else. Funny how that one line is the one that we all remember. I am currently listening to Fate of the Jedi Conviction and Luke is back on Nam Chorios (Cheerios, ha, ha). Hearing the description of the planet helps me remember/understand the story a bit more. Nice review. Will you all be doing a review on Apocalypse?Seams2Behttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15743144026790154782noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4591963962547240042.post-71242078992404989072012-03-12T05:23:10.980-05:002012-03-12T05:23:10.980-05:00Lis, I agree. However there is a new classic trilogy era Han focused novel that Timothy Zahn is currently writing, looking forward to that. I hate Han and Leia being old, as they are now, and think there's definitely a window to go back and write more of their younger years. The 3 year period between Shadows of Mindor and COPL would be a good place to start. Sadly I just don't think this will ever happen.

Please don't let Anakin's death put you off the rest of the NJO, there are some REALLY good Han and Leia moments in those books. I buried my head in the sand regarding a lot of the NJO for a few years, but when I did actually get the books I was very pleasantly surprised with how they were portrayed. So please, do check them out.

Don't worry about skipping Luke bits, we ALL do that!claire1976https://www.blogger.com/profile/04285049568087268653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4591963962547240042.post-45874131422960713042012-03-11T22:43:13.916-05:002012-03-11T22:43:13.916-05:00Please tell me you don't just said Hutt pornog...Please tell me you don't just said Hutt pornography. Wow I read some of these years (dare I say a decades) ago. It was my only outlet to get my Han fix (thank heavens Harrison Ford was still making movies). It got so bad in some of the "less engaging" books that I would actually skip Luke chapters to get to Han appearances.

I gotta admit I have just recently made my way back to the books. After they killed Chewie and being appauled at the authors way they felt Han would react (although it did get me two books focused on Han) that I stopped reading them. I gave them another try after a period of time to just have them kill Anakin. Enough! I have recently gotten back to the books and was very happy to find that several new books written in the original trilogy timeframe and up to Tatooine Ghost (yes just read that last year didn't realize it existed).

I think we need to come up with a way to persuade Bantam to commision more books during the original trilogy or right after ROTJ. I think they need some helpful guidance.

Thank heavens for you create folks out there that write fanfiction focused on Han and Leia. Sure helps me keep my Han and Leia fix in check.IndyLishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07955303904693731258noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4591963962547240042.post-2518256715768381542012-03-11T20:25:35.934-05:002012-03-11T20:25:35.934-05:00Yeah, I know exactly the photo you mean. :D

They actually were in Darksaber, too.

I did recall the Hutt pornography and definitely am trying my best not to imagine it.

I don't feel as though she wrote them different it was just that they weren't together. Leia spent most of the book halfway drugged/dehydrated and Han spent the whole thing basically just looking for her. They had lots of down time in COTJ to just be themselves, which was certainly not the case here. So I think it is more the circumstances rather than the characters acting different. Just my opinion, though. At least she was happy to see him!Zyrahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04860113813294303312noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4591963962547240042.post-87707793384265931272012-03-11T18:10:42.784-05:002012-03-11T18:10:42.784-05:00Sorry you lost your post Zyra. Certainly one of the better ones, but it's by Drew Struzan, and he always delivers. Luke doesn't look creepy or girly for once, Han looks like Harrison, and Leia looks mostly good but not sure I'm totally sold on the hair.

Oh and my ewwww moment was mention of Hutt pornography. Ugh, really!

It is odd though how Hambly wrote Han and Leia totally different here to COTJ, in the same way that Anderson wrote them differently in Darksaber compared to Jedi Academy. Either it's a conspiracy or it proves that even the best writers can be totally inconsistent.claire1976https://www.blogger.com/profile/04285049568087268653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4591963962547240042.post-2930759988640991322012-03-11T17:24:41.039-05:002012-03-11T17:24:41.039-05:00blah, now I'm typing up comments and they'...blah, now I'm typing up comments and they're disappearing. I told you I didn't absorb anything from this book. So if anyone else sees anything I missed or got wrong, go ahead and chime in because I'm sure that's not all of it. And I'll agree that I was expecting more from Hambly after COTJ and was so annoyed when they weren't together at all in the entire book.

As for Artoo and Threepio, it wasn't THAT bad but when you have to read these books week after week and you're looking for the good Han and Leia stuff you start to get impatient after 15 pages of them. It's the only thing I actually remember about it. I also laughed when you said you read that line about five times when you first read the book, yeah, me too, I couldn't quite believe what I'd just read. Unlike other moments where the sex is implied, this one actually states it as FACT, which is quite something in itself.

The house that they're in is a villa on one of Coruscant's moons where they had gone for a vacation, that's mentioned in chapter 6, page 102 in the paperback. So they don't live there, shame really, because I agree, it sounds like a nicer home than some Coruscant apartment. Although I believe in the Black Fleet Crisis books they do actually live in a house.

I must admit I did quite enjoy Artoo and Threepio's little escapade together, much more so than the Luke and Callista nauseum, but then I am quite a big fan of Threepio.

I agree regarding calling Leia, Your Excellency. Where the hell did that come from? But at least they didn't continue the trend in other books.

Generally this one was a huge let down for me, because Hambly did such an awesome job with Han and Leia in Children of the Jedi, yet it's very hard to believe that this was even written by the same person. But kudos to her for the white rug reference if nothing else. That one line alone, I think, warrants 2 stars.

I remember Dant Solo's missing moments fic on that famous scene. Great fic, although it did dwell much more on the pool, rather than the rug itself. Not that I'm complaining.

And no, we certainly aren't in any rush for The Crystal Star.claire1976https://www.blogger.com/profile/04285049568087268653noreply@blogger.com
