Now discuss.
Personally, I have mixed feelings. It could be amazingly super awesome. Although I fear that churning them out at this rate only guarantees that a large percentage of it is going to suck. Origin stories could be super cool or they might ruin the whole illusion. I honestly don't want to know too much about certain' characters' pasts. Then again, like I said, it could be super awesome.
I'm actually far more excited to hear about Disney World getting a Star Wars upgrade and we might be able to go to the cantina. That sounds absolutely nerdtastic.
The more I read about these spin off movies the more I hate the idea. Maybe the odd one now and again would be pretty cool. But the rate they intend churning them out just worries me a lot, and it's sounding like a case of quantity over quality, when of course it should be the reverse! So I'm really not that excited about all this, and I agree, we don't need origin stories. Part of the fun is deciding for yourself where these characters came from, and now it sounds like they're leaving nothing to our imagination. Maybe in a few years I'll be pleasantly surprised with the way the franchise is being handled, but at the moment it looks like it's total overkill.
ReplyDeleteBut that cantina? Oh yeah, now you're talking! :)
I'm not excited about spin offs at all. First of all, for anyone who's seen the OT or Prequels, having someone else play the characters is just going to be weird. I imagine I'll look at whoever and no matter how good they are, will just think "That's not Han/Luke/Leia/Obi-Wan, etc, its just someone trying to be them". Secondly, I agree, churning out one after the other makes me think the quality will be less than stellar. Granted there are fine TV shows, but we expect Star Wars to be bigger than life and I don't think they can do that quickly. And thirdly, I agree with claire1976 that part of the fun is making up backstories for yourself. I suppose we could consider these just another opinion, but somehow, when its on the screen, it becomes canon.
ReplyDeleteBut, yes, I would be all over Star Wars Land and spending time in the Cantina. Just make sure there is a Han Solo table I can sit at and my fantasies will have come true.
Like Zyra, I have mixed emotions. I don't need to know everyone's backstory. Not only that, I think churning out a movie per year is a poor business plan and could well hurt ticket sales and merchandise. It's overwhelming.
ReplyDeleteI have to confess that I hate the Disney parks,. But, Star Wars Land, complete with the cantina? I think we should all meet there and fantasize at Han and Chewie's table :)
I admit, I'm a big dork who loves Disney World. I love Star Tours, and the revamp is pretty cool and it's the only place I know of where you can walk through a store that sells only Star Wars merchandise. I'm super excited at the prospect of an expanded area of the park. I've heard potential for a separate Star Wars themed park, but I'd settle for a larger Star Wars themed area. A cantina? Uh, yes, please! A room full of Star Wars nerds would definitey be able to come up with some amazing things for a park. And we're all suckers who would pay lots of money to go there.
ReplyDeleteYeah, movie news? I should be thrilled but it all just sounds like way too much. I mean, even the best movies and characters can be overdone.
This also reminds me that I'm not a huge fan of the way they are sort of finding the "origin" of the Force, either. There are hints of that in the books and apparently in the Clone Wars cartoon, though I've never seen that. I think it should just remain mythical.
I'm a big dork for Disney too. Love the parks. My daughter and I rode Star Tours again and again and again. Had a lot of fun. Oh, an expanded area of the park would be too awesome. I did get to sit in a cantina mock up at Celebration. Just a table and some aliens, but cute. A full mock up would be crazy. At least my family would know where to find me. :)
ReplyDeleteI should be thrilled about the movies too and I am for Episode 7. Mostly curious where they will go with it. But not so much on a movie every year or on back story for the characters. That many movies that quickly seems overkill to me. And rather make up my own back stories like y'all have said.
I did see that the next Celebration is in Anaheim in 2015. Keeping that in mind.
I'll host everyone who doesn't mind sleeping on my girls' bed/air mattress/floor. The comfort factor's a little low but the price is right.
DeleteTold my kids about this news tonight with a feeling of momentousness. The whole franchise and fandom are going to change a ton in the next five years. It has already begun since the big announcement last fall.
ReplyDeleteThe great thing about the GFFA is that is allows for so much narrative latitude. There are certain points of consistency that must remain, but aside from that, the same story can be told a hundred different ways. That's why I can take a lot of the EU as "canon" but throw out, say, COPL. The quality of the work can also vary widely. So I guess what I'm saying is that I have hope that somewhere within all this new material there will be something I'm very glad about.
Mr. Stats put on Air Force One. I think it's drool time.
ReplyDeleteActually this is more "non" news, because people have been talking about the movie every year thing for months now. Are we ever going to get any actual significant new movie news EVER?
ReplyDeleteI'm going to stick my neck and say that something big connected to Episode 7 will be announced on October 30th, which is one year to the day that they announced it was happening. Just got a feeling.
Yes folks we have known about Episode 7 for pretty much an entire year now and STILL know diddly squat!
You don't have a bad feeling about it do you? ;) But that would be pretty awesome.
DeleteI felt a tremor in the Force...but too early to tell if it's a bad feeling ;)
DeleteWell, you know how that Force connection works. :)
DeleteThis may have been said before, but at least one character in Episode 7 needs to say "I've got a bad feeling about this!"
DeleteAbsolutely. :) Even Indy got in on that one.
DeleteThey sound way too carefree!!!!! I agree with Hitler what's gonna happen! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOsK537mAqc
ReplyDeleteHa! Waiting for that Suite Life of Kyle and Kenobi.
DeleteOhmygod ohmygod!! Razor's Edge is AMAZING!! Do yourself a favor and get it. It is worth the price in hardcover, Kindle, whatever format you can get. Honestly, this must be the best Leia characterization I've ever read. Imagine the best possible hybrid of fanfic and profic, and that's what this is. So. Much. Fun!
ReplyDeleteSorry to just randomly comment, but anyone and everyone I can get ahold of is hearing about this.
Agreed...you all should get it.
DeleteHeartily agree with the raves for Razor's Edge. I am such a anti-EU type of fan, and recently read Scoundrels, and found it, well, eh. Any characterization would have been welcome, even clumsy stuff. Just read RE straight through and enjoyed it very much.
DeleteGoing to also endorse this book. Im only half way through it, but I haven't enjoyed a profic book like this in a while. Leia has a full and fun role, and the repeated references to H/L are making me giddy.
DeleteWow, I just had trouble commenting on my own blog. That can't be good. Please elaborate on this book. Although I admit I was excited about not having to buy books, but lately my library has been getting the new ones so I hope it shows up. Except I've had Scoundrels checked out for almost a month and not even flipped through it yet.
DeleteYes, please elaborate everyone. Like is there a decent amount of sexual tension between them in this one?
DeleteThere's nothing major, but there still some fun tidbits. So, anyone who doesn't want to know anything, consider the following:
DeleteSPOILER ALERT
Feel free to delete this comment if it's too much of an excerpt for future readers.
My favorite part from reading last night:
As they spilled out of the refresher, Leia grimly reminded herself that she couldn't afford lapses like that. It was all right to be attracted to Han, but she couldn't be tempted, especially not in the middle of a mission, and being attracted at such close range, watching him shifting around in that confined space, made her think about warm skin and hard muscle...She couldn't be tempted, especially not in the middle of a mission.
Sometimes she felt like the Empire had killed part of her when they killed Alderaan, but moments like that made her remember she was still alive, still whole. It made her want to take all she could while she could, before the Empire killed her again.
the bit where they hide in the fresher to talk and keep getting distracted by each other's closeness is cute.
DeleteI just adored the inner thoughts showing how well they know each other and how Han understands her better than anyone. and she knows it.
Ooh thanks, me like :)
ReplyDeleteWhich hard muscle is she thinking about though? ;)
The hardest one on him. Two guesses. ;)
DeleteLol, I only need one guess ;)
DeleteHis brain right? ;) I'm thinking more of that fine drilling equipment.
DeleteBang on! Because after all, a guys brains are in his drilling equipment, right? ;)
DeleteJust a Leia as a victim of sexism link I thought y'all might find of interest. I'd just tweet it to somebody for regular dispersion but don't know anyone's handles. And Z said to comment while things slow while we wait for news and new movies.
ReplyDeletePrincess Leia still waiting for the Force: HT BlueMilk (a totally different BlueMilk than the one at the top of this page, by the way.) http://www.essentialkids.com.au/entertaining-kids/tv-and-movies/princess-leia-still-waiting-for-the-force-to-come-her-way-20130922-2u7hv.html?rand=3689995
Oh, and I like Razors Edge too. Best EU in a long while.
