A place to talk about Han and Leia and about reading about them and writing about them.

Star Wars Reads Day Returns October 5th!
This Saturday is the return of Star Wars Reads Day! Here is the official announcement including some special events, none of which I live anywhere near. Although in doing some browsing it appears that even my own local Barnes and Noble is having some fun things for the kids so check yours out as well.
I know there has been a lot of talk recently about the new Leia book and how good it is so feel free to discuss that here as well. You've all definitely got me intrigued in spite of the fact that I was very excited to not be buying Star Wars books constantly. Although currently I have Scoundrels checked out from the library, even though I haven't read it, so you don't always have to buy them to read them.
So what else are you reading lately? Will you attend any Star Wars Reads Day events? Will you read some Star Wars to celebrate? Perhaps just watch the movies because it's easier?

I haven't been able to read any of the new books due to an insane schedule. However my daughter, who turns seventeen today (Happy Birthday sweetie) has read Scoundrels and absolutely loved it. She told me the story since I knew I would not have the time to read it. It's a good one. She is currently reading Razors Edge, which she got for her birthday, and also loves it. She is halfway through it. She wants to read Kenobi next, heard good things about that one as well. Not really doing anything in particular to celebrate Star Wars reads day, though we have friends who will be trooping at Barnes and Noble.
ReplyDeleteAwww. Happy belated Birthday! You know I had to head down to the Barnes and Noble. ;) Sadly, no Han. :( Razor's Edge is a good one. I've been enjoying it. I'd be curious how the Kenobi book is. Did she read Crucible?
DeleteI love that you guys can get into it with your kids. So fun! And happy birthday!
ReplyDeleteI haven't been reading much at all, honestly. I read Crucible, and aside from a few little moments that stuck, the rest exited my brain pretty quickly. EU hasn't done much for me lately but I'm sure at some point I'll read Razor's Edge given what I've been hearing here. I know we're all pretty harsh critics! I just need to get back into the reading habit again.
Sadly my Saturday will be super busy so a trip to Barnes and Noble is probably out of the question. Unless I find out all Star Wars books are like 50% off, in which case I'll go get Razor's Edge!
OMG: just found out that one of our local libraries has an event where kids can make their own Princess Leia hair or Yoda ears! I think my 4-year-olds will be majorly into that.
ReplyDeleteIf I was anywhere near where Martha Wells is appearing, I would go and declare myself her Fangirl. Her take on H/L is the best thing since sliced bread. I say we start a petition for her to write her own Leia trilogy.
I totally loved her take on H/L. The sexual tension is thick, and the "subtle" things she writes are everywhere. Their concerns and respect for each other. The protectiveness they both didplay. And their characters both feel right. Id buy kore from Martha Wells for sure.
DeleteTotally! I loved the subtle innuendo and I can completely see how this respect, protectiveness, friendship, combatant could be the developing relationship between H/L.
DeleteI'm almost done with Razor's Edge, and I should be getting the Making of ROTJ tomorrow! I can't wait for that. I love this pic from it:

the boy and I are headed to our local bookstore, the Blue Manatee, where they are having a costume contest, making origami yodas, and having a visit by Chris Reiff accompanied by his life size remote control R2D2. he is going to be a jedi in his bathrobe. I got too busy to implement my plan and buy the Leia hoodie from heruniverse.com so I might invent my own Leia costume.
ReplyDeletejzhanfan
Unfortunately the boys and I will be otherwise engaged with choir activities all darn day. But hey what are you going to do when the kid will get up early of his own free will at 6AM to go to rehearsals.
ReplyDeleteI've read Choices of One, Scoundrels, Razor's Edge, and I'm halfway through Kenobi. All of them are good reads. I love Well's take on the H/L relationship and Choices has a reasonable variation on that relationship unlike much of the AU from COPL onward. I'm enjoying Kenobi but I am not losing sleep reading it like I did Razor's Edge and Scoundrels
I'm tempted to buy a Kindle/Nook just so I can start downloading Star Wars books! These are all intriguing me to no end.
DeleteThe closest Barnes and Noble is about 25 miles away, but if I can persuade Maddy to go, we will. In the meantime, we're watching Episode 4 together.
ReplyDeleteAnd I might have to break down and get Razor's Edge. You've got me intrigued. And I haven't read Scoundrels yet, so I can put that one on my Nook as well :)
ReplyDeleteI have now purchased Razor's Edge. You are all a terrible influence on me :)
ReplyDeletesorry stats but I couldn't be the only one being sucked back in...
DeleteI can't wait for October 12. The Making of the Empire Strikes Back is going to be too much fun.
DeleteHmm? That book came out a few years ago! ;) The ROTJ book just came out a few days ago.
DeleteKindle edition doesn't hit the pixels till 10/12.
DeleteOooh, there's gonna be an enhanced version? Nice!
DeleteA book like that is far too nice for a Kindle. Anything with pictures and I have to buy the book itself.

ReplyDeleteJust got back from our local Barnes and Noble Star Wars Reads day event. It was great! 501st and Rebel Legion were there. And very, very nice. I got to talk to them a bit and were just fantastic. The kids didn't know who the trooper was dressed up as the Death Star operator (you know the one with the full black helmet). We were laughing about that. They had story time and a Stormtrooper watched over it. Lot of fun. Sadly not many books I was dying to buy. Should have bought Razor's Edge today I guess. But the event was a good time.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a really good day ;) Awesome that the 501st were there. We really need cool stuff like that in this country, we are severely lacking in cool stuff at times like this :(
DeleteI'm reading Razor's Edge BTW, it's slow going but that's because I'm a painfully slow reader and not because the book is bad or anything you understand!
Thanks. I did. The troopers did a great job. Looked great and really accessible to people.
DeleteHee hee. We sucked you in too. ;) I know. I read pretty slow too. But it's been a good read. I've found myself chuckling quite a bit. Just enough H/L goodness to keep me amused.
just have to say, I love my kids. We went to our local bookseller for StarWars Reads Day yesterday and they were so into it and had fun. The girl (days away from 14) pretended to be bored by the whole thing but when no one was looking she disappeared into the restroom and emerged with her hair up in Leia-buns and she borrowed my Lego lightsaber earrings (hot glue gun = the swiss army knife of crafters). also she answered a question in the trivia contest. the boy knew the answers to almost all of the trivia questions and had a long chat with Chris Reiff who illustrates a lot of the technical books and got him to sign his Millennium Falcon owners manual. they came home with posters and pins and fortune wookiees and I spent $83 on books they'd piled in my hands and I didn't care one bit. in the words of one of the posters, "reading, it's our only hope".
ReplyDeleteIn other news I bought Razors Edge on my Kindle and proceeded to stay up all night reading it. really awesome characterizations. definitely 4 stars at least on the H/L scale. no sexy bits but just really good interaction and inner thoughts that show how their relationship is building into something more.
It was fun wasn't it? I thought they did a nice job with it. That is funny about the girl. They can't be bothered at that age can they? But man, you had someone cool at yours. Not so much at mine, but it was a good time. Did you get any really good books?
DeleteWow. You read the whole thing? I'm barely a quarter of the way through. Definitely a lot of good interaction and lines. I've been finding myself chuckling a lot. What the hubby must think when I do that. :)
Already writing Razor's Edge fic in my head. Anyone else?
DeleteTroy Denning was at a B&N in Minnesota yesterday. and Tim Zahn was at an event in Portland along with Ian Doescher, author of William Shakespeare's Star Wars. jealous.
ReplyDeleteon the other hand we are pretty lucky too, Chris Rieff is local to us and he brings his remote controlled life sized R2 and R5. a fun time had by all.
Our Star Wars Reads day was fun. My daughter (4) wore my vintage 1978 Darth Vader turtleneck (I was the same age at the time!). My son (also 4) was allowed to bring his DK Yoda book along in lieu of any special clothing.
ReplyDeleteAt brunch, Son pretended his Yoda book was a menu and showed us a picture of his favorite dish: the Chewbacca Taste.
Unfortunately, the local library we went to did a kind of sad job of it. There was even a USS Enterprise on one of their signs!! (And I have the photographic evidence if you need it.) But Daughter got to make her own Leia Buns, and they had little lightsabers made out of rolled up paper. Son brought home at least three. I wanted to give the kids a non-commercial experience (esp since Daughter asked the other day if I bought her!), but next year I think we'll go for B&N.
And, as we were leaving, we ran into a full-on cosplayer family. Dad was ep 2 Obi Wan, daughter (7) was ep 4 Leia, and son (24 months!!) was ep 1 or 2 Anakin. The mom was just kind of taking it all in.
Ooo, an Enterprise? Not good. That is funny about your daughter. Like the Leia bun idea. I want some. :) A whole cospkay family? Nice. Some troopers had their families with them at mine.
DeleteI loved Wm Shakespeare's Star Wars! Apparently he's going to do eps 5 and 6 too. I can't wait!
ReplyDeleteYou guys are awesome. I love the descriptions of your Star Wars Reads Day fun, especially getting the rest of the family involved.
ReplyDeleteI even managed to drag hubby away from football long enough to go. :) It was a good time.
DeleteAww, jeez guys. I've been EU-free for over ten years now, but you have me adding SW books to my Amazon wish list. I might have to check some of these out. *shakes head* I feel like a drug addict about to fall off the wagon.....
ReplyDeleteSR, these ladies are a VERY bad influence.
ReplyDeleteI have a Kindle, but I decided to buy the coffee table book version of 'The Making of The Empire Strikes Back."
Razor's Edge is good. I loathe much of the EU, but this one's a keeper.
You are a bad influence. I just ordered myself the complete set of 'The Making of ' books for a Christmas present for myself and am now searching the local libraries for Kenobi, Scoundrels, etc. So far all that was available was Crucible. Terrible influence, but I like it and I'm excited.
ReplyDeleteI just read on Club Jade that Ford is appearing tonight on the BBC's Graham Norton Show (http://clubjade.net/?p=54628). He's appearing with Benedict Cumberbatch, which is like fangirl crack as far as I'm concerned. Unfortunately, Mr. Ford reportedly claims that he's undecided about ep VII while also maintaining that he'd do another Indy movie in an instant. Jerk. :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm not overly concerned by Harrison's comments. He is after all promoting another movie and if he admitted any interest in episode 7 at all then that's all everyone would be asking him about. He would be hounded. Similarly if he came out and said he wasn't going to be in it, people wouldn't leave him alone. So best Option all round is to appear as nonchalant as possible. With shooting due to start end of January there's very little chance that the film makers are still waiting on Harrison's decision this late in the game. He knows exactly what's happening but he's just not talking about it.
DeleteOh, God! If after all this, Harrison Ford *wasn't* in Episode VII? I don't think I could handle the disappointment. Seriously, I just might curl up in a ball with some salty snacks and cry while watching ESB. In other words, I might fall into "traumatic break-up" mode. *sigh*
DeleteIf he's *not* in then I hope Carrie and Mark aren't either. Didn't Mark state earlier this year that they had an agreement that if one dropped out then none of them would do it? I hope that's true because I don't want to see Leia without Han. I'd rather they just write them out, because clearly their roles can't be that big anyway.
DeleteBut I still think Harrison's in.
I agree with Claire. He's maybe didn't choose his words as carefully this time and has caused a panic, but seriously, this decision, whatever it is, has long since been made. There is no way he doesn't know already if he's going to be in it or not. I'm choosing to believe he's still just not at liberty to say and is changing how he's answering the question to a different sort of ambiguous.
DeleteI really, really hope I'm right!
I do think you're right that he's just bulls***ing utterly. Club Jade has another post giving what I find to be the best theory about this whole situation with the delayed announcement. I mean, isn't it weird that rumors about the big three have been flying, Lucas himself has basically leaked it, but they _still_ won't make a formal announcement? Apparently it's been delayed at Ford's request because he's been promoting Ender's Game (a film he seems to actually care about). That makes more sense than anything else I've heard as a reason for why no announcement was made at SDCC. But now I have Twitter set to buzz me if there are any tweets from SW sources at NYCC tomorrow.
DeleteYeah, see, if they aren't going to be in it, there's no reason to keep delaying and saying they don't know if we're just going to be disappointed when we finally learn they're not. Why be ambiguous about it if the answer is no? Keep in mind this is the same theory I stick to when it comes to Carrie's non-denial of an affair with Harrison ;) I truly think that if they aren't going to be in it, they never were and that would've been stated up front rather than dragging it out for a year. I just wish we knew WHEN they were finally going to announce something REAL.
DeleteThere's clips of this interview on YouTube already and it's not even on TV until later tonight. I watched the clip and honestly, I still think Harrison is just messing with us. It didn't worry me in the slightest.
DeleteAlso Cumberbatch fans, he's highly rumoured to be the baddie in episode 7 (even though he has just played the baddie in Abrams latest Trek movie) and with that in mind, it does seem like there's something going on with the two of them...like they BOTH know something.
oh good Lord talk about fangirl crack. Harrison and Cumberbatch in the same movie? don't toy with me. I swear I would watch either of them just read the phone book.
Deletewe are watching ROTJ tonight. it;s much sillier than I remember.
The complete episode will air on BBC America next Saturday 10/19
DeleteEveryone please watch that show and see the interview for yourselves. I saw it on British TV last night and it's a good one. And it should reassure those of you worried about Harrison's participation in episode 7. It's amazing how certain websites put such a negative spin on what he says, but when seen in the full context you will quickly realise he's still having fun not being able to talk about it. The body language and facial expressions tell you all you need to know. Plus there's a fun mention of Han and Leia and Harrison says "I Know". ;)
DeleteI agree, he is totally having fun with it.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteThe "I know" was fun, but it was the "thank you" that I thought was the best!
ReplyDeleteI like how he casually said "yeah, sure" when he agreed to let another woman give it a try. It was just too cute.
Deletefinally got to watch this on the DVR last night, just fabulous. not sure which I liked best, I know or thank you. I just loved the look on his face when they played the ESB scene, it was like when your parents insist on showing your boyfriend your baby pictures. honestly though my favorite bit was the Working Girl reference. I almost fell off the couch laughing.
DeleteThe Making of the Empire Strikes Back is now on my coffee table about three feet away. About every 10 seconds or so I need to remind myself to finish my work first.
ReplyDeleteCarrie Fisher turned 57 on October 21, 2 days ago. Perhaps the Princess who attracted the scoundrel needs a birthday story :)
ReplyDeleteHey, this is random, but I don't know where else to ask? Um, was there a Rebel base in-between Hoth and when the fleet met up at Sullust? Or were they just clustered together as a "Rebel fleet" the whole time? And if they had a base, where was it? I'm flirting with a "missing moment"/companion ficlet (you know, just to get my feet wet again, and also to give myself a break from this story post that I've been literally working for like ten years, ha ha *yikes*)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, any help would be appreciated.
And stats, I like your idea! Can I look forward to a "Leia's birthday" fic from you in the future?
Not "Like" ten years, OVER ten years. Come on, you can do it!
DeleteAs for the base, interesting question. I feel like there would've been another base in between. I mean, floating around Sullust for months seems kind of weird, doesn't it? Damn, I wonder if anything specific was mentioned in Shadows of the Empire?
That said, honestly, if nobody has a definitive answer on this, I'd do whatever it is you want to do to work around the story you want to tell. If it works better on Sullust, great. If not, make up something else, or try to find an alternative. That's the great thing about fiction, we can just write and make stuff up :)
Well, technically, the post I'm working on right now? I started it in summer of 2005….but shit, yeah, that's still a looong time to work on an update. Sheesh.
DeleteI haven't been slacking though, at least not completely. I took a break a few weeks ago, then went back to look at the new stuff with fresh eyes and, well…..I just hated it. I thought it was terrible. And it just made me really discouraged….so yeah, I thought stepping away and working on a quick "side project" might help reinvigorate me.
Anyway, back to my question…..I suppose it doesn't really matter. I don't think it would affect the story too much either way, I just wanted to make it "accurate" if at all possible. But yeah, I've never heard of another base, but it seemed like a really long time for the Rebels to go without one. Hmph….
I don't think there's anything EU wise that mentions another base, but I agree it does seem odd if they didn't have one. Surely it would be safer and more secure to be housed somewhere rather than just bumming it around space for months. But I agree with Zyra, this is fanfic so just do whatever feels right for you... The galaxy is your oyster :)
DeleteThey did stop on Ord Mantell, but as for how long, I'd have to reread some of the books and right now, no time for that.
DeleteRandom fact of the day: you should all be relieved (or horrified?) to know that there is no such thing as a "Leia/Greedo" fic on fanfiction.net (Ooh, or did I just inspire the makings of a very bizarre fanfic challenge?). I found this out when I accidentally put "Greedo" instead of Han in my search filter. I got a "No matches found" At first I was like Wtf? And then I laughed.
ReplyDeleteLeia and Greedo. Get on it, people! There's a niche that needs to be filled!
Hah, I'm actually relieved to hear that. Leia seems to get paired up with just about everyone else.
DeleteIs anyone else annoyed by the new filters? Too many characters! You can actually filter it to NOT include certain people, too, but still.
I'm only annoyed with it on my netbook. The filter page cannot be moved or scaled so I can't apply the filters I want. It's fine on my work computer.
DeleteI had to resave a link to it after they redid the filters. It's easiest way to filter for H/L. But the new filters are a total pain.
DeleteLol, Rose. It's bad enough there are Leia/Jabba fics. Can I just say ewwww? Ok, going to read some H/L smut now to erase those thoughts from my mind. Where's a neuralizer when you need one?
Eeuw is right.
