A place to talk about Han and Leia and about reading about them and writing about them.

Merry Christmas!
Yes, we're still here! Yeah, I know, not a lot going on around here lately. Hoping to change that but this time of year is always a little busy and mindless fandom fun isn't really at the forefront of anyone's mind. Or at least not mine. I hope you're all still around and I hope that eventually we can get things going around here again. I suspect that when/if we ever get some concrete news on the new movies the interest level will pick up again.
Anyone have any exciting plans? I've got a few cool Star Wars gifts to give to people although I doubt I'll receive any. Would love to see if anyone gets anything cool, you simply must share with us.
Hope you all have a nice holiday! And to make it up to you, here is a very strange photo of Harrison Ford from the set of Witness I'm sure you'll all enjoy in spite of the fact that it will inspire a lot of questions:

Merry Christmas everyone, hope you all get some SW goodies. I'm hopefully getting the Making Of books for ESB and ROTJ.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great pic of Harrison isn't it? I remember the first time I saw it a while back and had to wonder what the hell was going on. Shame he didn't flash without the underpants ;)
I was kind of hoping for a little bit of SW casting news as a Christmas treat, lol, who am I kidding? At this rate they won't be announcing anything until the movie comes out. It seems like we've been waiting a ridiculously long time to find out stuff. We still know virtually nothing.
Oh and Zyra, that top picture doesn't show up, I've tried to view it on my phone and iPad and neither are displaying it.
Thanks, I could see it on my computer but I changed the format anyway. Can you all see the first picture now?
DeleteAnd thanks for reminding me I asked for making of ROTJ for Christmas! Plus Razor's Edge so I'll have something to read. Did I mention I finally got around to reading Scoundrels? Because I did.
Yup, can see it now. Thanks.
DeleteDang. That is some picture. What IS he doing? And no doubt, it's begging for no underpants. :)
ReplyDeleteNo plans for Christmas. I burned all my travel fun time at Thanksgiving.
How did you like Scoundrels? I started to read it but haven't finished it. Have enjoyed Razor's Edge..
Lol, I don't know what he's doing, but think he needs to flash more often ;)
DeleteYou aren't wrong about that. Maybe we can crop it just above the undies so it looks like he's flashing. :)
DeleteThat would require someone with some photoshop skills. Gee, which one of us has promised some good stuff in photoshop? ;)
DeleteIn the words of the minions in Despicable Me - Whaaaat? I'm not saying a word. :)
DeleteAnd you know I cropped it already. ;)
DeleteWe had Christmas Eve with our granddaughter and friends last night, and I'm so glad it's Mr. Stats and me tonight. I did get a cool Darth Vader ornament for my tree.
ReplyDeleteThat photo above has to be a fic prompt of some kind. I won't say more :)
Nollaig Shona, everyone!
I would not discourage anyone from using that picture for a story prompt, however I might encourage you to ignore the random men surrounding him if/when you choose to imagine a scenario to write about.
ReplyDeleteI would second that about the random men.
DeleteLol, very good point that.
DeleteMerry Christmas everyone. :)
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas to all!!
ReplyDeleteNollaig Shona, Joyeux Noel, Feliz Navidad, Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteAt a lefty political blog where I hang out they have posted A Star Wars Christmas Special in its entirety. Do I dare watch? I'm kind of afraid to.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it like a requirement? :)
DeleteEw, no. You know how some things are so bad they're good? This is so far beyond that it's not even funny. You almost can't even laugh at it because you just feel bad for everyone involved. Seriously.
DeleteOn another note, I got Vader's Little Princess, Razor's Edge and Making of ROTJ for Christmas so I'm happy :)
That is true. Even Carrie has said it's the kind of stuff she tortures her daughter with. Or something like that.
DeleteVery nice haul, Zyra.
My granddaughter got Vader's Little Princess. She loves it.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to skip the Christmas special and watch ice creature movies on Syfy. That is, when Mr. Stats gives up the TV.
I do love book. Very cute.
ReplyDeleteGot the Making of Books for ESB and ROTJ, what fab books they are. So many great pics.
ReplyDeleteI was flicking through the ROTJ one and found a very interesting comment from Carrie. Surprised it wasn't mentioned in the Shipper's Review of that book on here recently because it's the kind of thing that us shippers would kind of dig. It's on page 85 of the hardcover if anyone wants to see for themselves. Carrie refers to Han as Leia's "first boyfriend". So is this an official confirmation that there really was no one else before Han, as most of us probably believe anyway. If Carrie has been led to believe that, and she knows Leia better than anyone else, then that seals the deal for me. :)
Oh, Carrie says he was her first boyfriend? Even though we all knew that already, now that we know Carrie said it, and presumably she knows Leia better than anyone (aside from fictional Han) then that pretty much settles it :)
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteWell done, Claire. That was a good spot and very interesting. Carrie should know her better than anyone with the exception of Uncle George. Or fictional Han like Zyra said. :) You know how we love to analyze these things. I do find it very intriguing that she said boyfriend and not lover or consort. Hmmm. You'd think if they'd gotten that far in the relationship he wouldn't be just a boyfriend. And they used the word lover in COPL when Han referred to his relationship with Leia. May be grasping for straws, but food for thought
DeleteVery good points, Amara. I like your thinking. :)
DeleteIs it sad that we can't stop over thinking all this stuff?
I don't know, amara Z, but do we really expect Carrie Fisher to use the word "consort" while referring to Han's relationship to Leia? Hee hee, I just don't see it. As for "lover" she might just have an aversion to the word, like I do. "Lover" Ugh. For some reason the word sends shivers up my spine. I've never described "a significant other" as a "lover", no matter how apt the term might be. But that just might be some random personal bias I have.
DeleteI don't know. I pretty much think "boyfriend" is a pretty all-ecompoassing term for someone who you're in a relationship with, but are not engaged or married to yet. *shrug* At least that's how I've always seen it.
Dammit, but now you have *me* over thinking this stuff. Ha ha.
Another vote for "ew" on the term "lovers" except when we're talking about Han and Leia, then it's ok. I subscribe to the Tina Fey/Liz Lemon thought process on this one: "That word bums me out unless it's between the words meat and pizza."
DeleteI love this blog more then my family most days (you guys just "get it" - I dig that) BUT that Zyra also quoted my fav 30 Rock too on here... *swoon*. Srsly, SWOON.
DeleteAnyway, I'm busy (not really) madly typing away on a few new ideas for 2014. I'm super excited to get the ball rolling.
Any ideas for a new challenge? Cuz... I think we need one.
Hah, you love Star Wars and 30 Rock, too? I've been watching lots of 30 Rock lately, got some DVDs for Christmas. Here is a tumblr that doesn't get updated often but still is still genius in its combination of the two: http://lizlemonshotfirst.tumblr.com/
DeleteAlso, hope you work on your story :)
To be honest, the amount of love i have for both SW and 30Rock cant accurately be measured.
DeleteI've been happily working hard (not really) on my story, but i have ADD and I've switched gears over the holidays and stared putting the pretty sparkiling touches on the first chapter of my next story. It's fab. But I wont let myself post it until i'm finished Future.
So on that note, I really should go back to writing it - as that what my hubby thinks i'm doing. (I'm actually just escaping the horrible racket of Grand Theft Auto 5 in the basement) Lord, I hate that game.
:)
Thanks for the tumblr. it made my night!!!
Merry Christmas everyone. It was a very SW Christmas for me.. all three Making Of books, a Millenium Falcon t-shirt, a Han Solo mug (I know), and Star Wars Frames. Oh, and a Kindle, so I can download Razor's Edge, Kenobi, Scoundrels, etc. I'm completely geeking out.
ReplyDeleteLet it be known, that I bought everything but the Kindle for myself. They've been stashed them since October, so I'm excited to be able to finally be looking at them. Just started into Frames, but there are some cool (and wacky) pictures.
And as for those pictures above.. What the heck? I'm not complaining, mind you, but I have yet to come up with any plausible explanation.
I for one am not even going to try :)
DeleteHey, all. Hope all who celebrate had a merry christmas. I've been struck down with the flu, so I've had better years. Didn't really get any SW loot either, but I did get some Amazon gift cards so I'm thinking of fixing that myself.
ReplyDeleteQuick responses: The Star Wars Holiday Special is NEVER a good idea. It may seem like it *must* be fun, or have some redeeming qualities, but I assure you, it is not, and has none of these things.
I find it interesting Carrie said that about Leia. I always assumed as much, but I like hearing it "confirmed" for me. ;-)
Anyway, hope all are having a nice holiday. I'm going back to bed now.
Oh, I agree. I never doubted that Han was Leia's first boyfriend but it makes me happy to have it confirmed :) I also flipped through it some more and read randomly here and there and found it interesting to see how Carrie really did care about Leia as a character and wanted to make sure she was interesting and not just a bitch. She wanted her to be softer and more feminine, although she also said that she thought she lost WAY too much of her edge and went too far in the other direction in ROTJ. I think we can all agree there, too. And she mentioned how there were so many of those awful things that had happened to her and yet she never shows much vulnerability. Sometime soon I'll have to actually sit down and READ all of my making of books because I've only flipped through them all, read some but mostly just looked at pictures.
Delete(PS: your comment originally came through as spam. So if you saw it wasn't posted for a bit and wondered why, that was why. Don't worry, I always check for that and try and fix it ASAP!)
She was certainly spot on about ROTJ. It's pretty noticeable. I felt kind of bad that in the same section about Leia's first boyfriend she talked about how people thought Leia was a space bitch. She isn't the nice person in Empire at times, but I never thought she was a bitch. She just knows her mind. I can respect that. :)
DeleteI never thought of Carrie's character as a bitch. Tough and cool and snappish at times, but not a bitch. I might have been a lot nastier in her shoes :)
DeleteWell…..the "walking carpet" dig at Chewie in "A New Hope" was pretty bitchy. Oh, and she was pretty cold to Han in their first scene in "Empire" together. I mean, when's she's just like "That's right." OUCH. I almost wanted to lick Han's wounds for him….wait, that came out wrong…..no it didn't….yes it did. Uh, never mind….
DeleteBut really, those are the only examples of "bitchiness" that I can really think of. Otherwise, her, uh, moments of "aggravation" seem warranted, or provoked.
And did it really show up as spam? Because it showed up on my end right away. Of course I literally did go right to bed right after, so who knows if it disappeared or not.
I never really thought of her as a bitch either. But her comments can be a bit borderline. I'm pretty snarky myself and probably have a high threshold for it. :) People probably don't know what to do with a smart, opinionated woman, especially back then. I'm sure Han did his fair share to rile her up on purpose. :)
DeleteLol, Rose, on the wounds. I'm with you. Han is welcome at my house anytime. :)
I didn't see her as a total bitch, either. I do wonder though sometimes if we lose sight of the character we actually see simply because we (meaning fanfic writers here) have spent so much time exploring other sides of her and filling in the gaps. She is pretty darn harsh, but doesn't she have good reason to be? I mean, her planet was destroyed. And this guy is being a total jerk right back to her. I'm sure she's not used to having men actually call her out when she's being harsh (Luke puts her on a pedestal right away) and she reacts defensively. I think many women like her would react the same way. He lives to push her buttons and that's what we see of them. But a bitch? I never saw it like that. Ok, maybe the "Walking carpet" was a little harsh as pointed out, but the rest was mostly provoked.
DeleteGiven all she has gone through, I think she has good reason to be in a bad mood for the next 40 years. :) That is pretty funny about Han being a total jerk. Probably so. And I'm sure he was the first to challenge her really.
DeleteWell, think about when she said the walking carpet comment and the context. She just broke out of the detention center, barely got out of the trash compactor alive, the two guys rescuing her are kind of fumbling it (at least to her standards), and one of them is talking back and shooting so everyone can hear. I've seen people get really snarky when they get good and frustrated and all she really wants is to get out of there and for people to stay out her way so she can get things done. Perfect mom material right there. :) Just saying.
And, I think it's cool that Han Solo is Leia's first bf. We all kind of suspected it. She's been too busy with activities that are usually relegated to people older than herself and never had time to realize that she had a vulnerable side -- well, until she met Han :)
ReplyDeleteHi all! I've been in survival mode for the past few weeks, so I haven't had a chance to weigh in on that truly odd, yet still slightly alluring, photo above. And if anyone uses it as a prompt, extra points for incorporating the random guys - that's definitely part of the whole effect there. :-)
ReplyDeleteWe had a pretty Star Warsy Christmas in my family, since I got my kids the two first Lego Star Wars specials (and they have the other series on cable), and my son got the Playskool Millenium Falcon (although he calls it the "Mammalian Falcon"). There were also many epic lightsaber battles. Fun was had by all.
I aways assumed it was pretty much canon that Leia has never had a "real" BF before Han. But I do love fics that make her more experienced. My pal AnnaFan has a great story that ends with Han promising Leia an amazing first time, after which she pats his cheek and says, "that's sweet, but you're a few years too late."
I'm thinking anyone besides Han would pale in comparison. Just saying. :)
DeleteTotally!! There ain't no lovin' like a scoundrel's lovin'. ;)
DeleteLol! No doubt.
DeleteThis comment doesn't have much to do with anything other than I think this is funny and need to share. When I get my email alerts for your posts they get grouped together by "subject" and in this case the subject is a comment on a specific post, but the sender line shows who "sent" it, or who commented. Since there are a couple of comments the sender right now says, "Stoned....Lady." So, it looks like I got a comment from Stoned Lady. I just thought that was funny :)
ReplyDeleteOff the wall comment here... was just cruising around way back and found some old CE stuff. Started reading an oldie by Martha Wilson called Resolutions. A paragraph in the first part trigger my memory as being very similar if not word for word from Razors Edge which I just re-read on Christmas because my loving family let me down and did not get me more books... then in Part Two the writer mentions a character named Kifar Itran. So am I the only one who didn't know that Martha Wells is the frantic writer from the 1980's Martha Wilson??? Feeling totally clueless..
ReplyDeleteOh love the Han flasher shot. Does lead to other thoughts now doesn't it?
Wow, MY comment got lost somewhere. Anyway, that is super awesome if that is the same person, which it probably is. So that makes two old fanfic writers (that we know of) who have gone on to actually have something to do with the EU. So cool! And honestly based on the things I heard about that book, the alluding to increasing sexual tension, things we only ever got in our fanfic, I'm not surprised. Now I'm more excited to read the book.
DeleteThat's bad if your comment gets lost. :) And very cool on the fanfic author's doing stuff in the EU.
DeleteOh my gosh, that could be her! Off to CE...
ReplyDeleteJust dug through more of her stuff and the characterizations feel the same..
DeleteJust had a look at the book- the author mentions being a fanfic writer in the introduction and her book is dedicated to Z.P. Florian (whose work is also at CE). Awesome :)
Delete*goes back to lurking...*
Well, gee, what do you know? It does say it right there. And you're right if you're thinking I hardly ever read those. Again, just awesome.
DeleteI never read those... Have to check my e-version and see if it's there. Do you have the hard copy prim?
DeleteWhere did you locate other stories, Yma? I want to grab them before they disappear!
ReplyDeleteLink, please! I wouldn't mind seeing them myself.
Deletehttp://web.archive.org/web/20090311013302/http://www.somerescue.com/CE--AlphaByTitle--R.html
ReplyDeleteI found it in the Archives on Wayback... See above. All of the old CE is there.
Awesome. Thanks!
DeleteWow, it's been busy over here! Sorry, I haven't commented. I've subscribed to email updates but never get them, so I just check in every now and then.
ReplyDeleteA very belated Merry Christmas but perfectly on-time happy new year to everybody.
Personally, I'm hoping for some improvement in 2014. That picture of Harrison is a good start. ;)
And wow- I'm reeling from that fact that a fanfic writer was actually the author of Razor's edge. It makes complete sense and yet, its unbelievable. Adding to my disbelief is the fact that I first read her fanfic awhile ago. Good for her!
Oh, and another thing- I got a 2014 calendar with Darth Vader and young Luke comics. Its great :)
1- MERRY CHRISTMAS to everyone- writers, lurkers, and everyone in between! 2- That photo is amazing and I don't care what the circumstances! 3- I got a bunch of fun SW things but my favorite is my sexy R2D2 dress. I asked for it for Christmas to wear for my 30th birthday in Feb which has been themed by my non-geeky friends as Nerdy Thirty! Can't wait to run around the Las Vegas Strip in that dress! Also got an AT-ST Hallmark ornament, SW Mad Libs, an R2 USB charger for my car (which unfortunately I think it too big), and then bought myself some lightsaber earrings courtesy of ThinkGeek.com. Can't buy anyone presents from there without getting myself a little something! I really wanted one of the "Making Of" books but looks like I'll have to buy on my own :-( 4- One of my New Years Resolutions is to write my first FF. I started something in response to the Father's Day challenge and it floundered. I'm really bad at it but I enjoy reading everyone else's wonderful stories that I thought I needed to contribute something.
ReplyDeleteSide Note- I recently discovered tumblr and found a bunch of cool people to follow. I'm on there as jackattac7 if anyone wants to check out my posts (which are mostly reposts of sexy Harrison).
Lastly- ANCHORMAN 2! I <3 Mr. Ford!
