Episode VII: The Poster and Trailer

Finally, after many months of no news, we finally have something to look at!

First, the poster. I like it, but I also doubt they would've done anything with it I wouldn't have liked. It fits the same style as the other posters, and while our favorite characters are clearly not the main characters, at least they are next to each other, which I will take as a good sign. The lack of Luke is interesting, to say the least. But since Luke really isn't a main reason I want to see this movie, I'm not really concerned about that. Though I'm sure there are lots and lots of irate Luke fans out there. I would also guess there is some significance to the fact that Rey's weapon is parallel up against Kylo Ren's lightsaber, but I'm sure we will eventually learn why that is not a coincidence.

And the new trailer!!!! What else can we even say. I am writing this fast because I want to get it posted so we can start talking, but at least now from the trailer we know that Han and Leia at least hug in it. So, there is that. AAAAHHHHH!!!!! What does it all mean?!?!

Look at them!!!

And ok, final edit, to add another photo of this moment, this time with Leia's eyes open so you can really see he anguish:

And, to top of the night, I have tickets to a show at 7pm on December 17th!!!  That was incredibly stressful. Online sales were a mess, Fandango was crashing, everything was moving incredibly slowly, and the theater I wanted to get the tickets from was entirely not working. So I had to broaden my search a bit. I did not get my first choice theater, but I do have tickets to a show at 7pm. And actually I also have tickets to a show at 10pm. During the stressful ticket buying process, my movie buddies and I were conversing and trying to figure out what to do, so we got those too while we were worried we might not be able to get any at all. Phew, that was the last thing I was worried about, and now we just have to wait. And of course show up early enough that we can get good seats and sit near each other.

And another edit, to add this:

  1. Wow. I loved seeing that hug (as quick as it was). Han was really holding her tight and Leia looks terrified. At least if they are estranged at the beginning of the movie, they have a nice moment or two. Hopefully MORE.

  2. Just saw the trailer, but had to come here. Wow. Just wow! Will (might) have words later. Just very hopeful at the moment.

  3. Oh, I was so stoked to see it. And very surprised to hear all of the hype during the game about it. I noticed that too about the sites. Was SO glad I got my tickets super early. Pays to watch like a hawk I guess. :) I have Dec 17 7 pm tickets too.

It's all so surreal. It's hard to believe it's just two months to go. Feels like we've been talking about the movie forever and now almost here.

I caught the Han/Leia hug too. I saw Leia first and rewinded to see who she was with. Very stoked it was Han! But so fleeting I couldn't even pause on it to really check it out. I would think they are at least together. Or very good friends. But I'd say together. That's my best guess. That was an awful good hug he gave her and protective. I wonder if they have kids though. It was pretty obvious what the Force Awakens mean. Not that I couldn't tell, but apparent from what they said, it gave a good hint to it. So wondering if they didn't have kids.

Do like the poster. It's pretty cool.

    1. I know that Kathleen Kennedy said that the previous novels written that include Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin are no longer 'cannon', but also that they weren't being eliminated, either. I think its very hard for SW fans that have read and assimilated them into the Star Wars universe to now pretend they never existed.

I'm wondering if they might introduce some of these characters in episode seven, perhaps, maybe at, or near the end... and I still say that Rey is their daughter - Adam Driver their son?..

  4. Did anyone else notice that around the part when Han is saying, "It's true. All of it." They are playing the Han and Leia theme in the background?!?! That cannot possibly be unintentional.

    1. Funny...my friend was in a restaurant last night when JJ Abrams walked in. My comment to my friend was that he better eat out A LOT in the next two months, because depending on what we all see on a movie screen in December, it may be a very, very long time before he can eat out again!

  6. Boy...that's some angsty Star Wars, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. But that hug gave me hope...if I had to take a spoilery guess, maybe a moment before Han goes off to battle when they realize that the big bad of the movie is their son? Because clearly parenting was never so hot in the GFFA. :)

One thing's pretty clear: the rumors that said Han's part is HUGE are right. Looks like Harrison Ford's movie for sure.
Now someone nominate the man for that damn Oscar he needs to win.

  7. Yeah, this definitely looks pretty dark. I hope it is not quite as humorless as it appears in the trailer. Though I suppose ESB didn't have a ton of humor and that movie is amazing.

Aside from the glaring fact that there was no Luke, I've also just realized we did not see Threepio or Artoo, either. Except I guess that one shot of Artoo that we had already seen. Not a good time to be a Luke fan.

Totally agree, looks like Han is the main deal for this movie, he was in the trailer almost more than anyone. I will say I find it extremely interesting that he is talking to her as though maybe she and Finn have no idea really about Jedi and stuff? Has nothing happened there in the last 30 years? Seems very interesting.

But I mean, duh, of course my favorite part by far was intense Han and Leia hug. A little disappointed that we didn't get Leia dialog, but I'll survive and now I can honestly say that I will be totally fine if I learn nothing new about this movie until I finally see it.

    1. Yeah, I'm with you. And sounded an awful like they hid everything for a long time. Interesting. It may have been dark. At least seemed bleak. I do hope there is some humor in there. But I'm dying to see it. It looks pretty amazing. I hope. Good point on R2 and Threepio.

    2. Which may be a reason Han and Leia did not have kids? If there were supposed to be no more Sith/Jedi, there couldn't be Skywalker genes running around out there. Hmm. Interesting.

  9. Remember, all these movies have one thing in common - secrets! It took 6 year to find out DV was Luke's dad and Leia's brother. This is a trilogy. I'm sure there are lots of secrets. It might take 6 years to find them all out!
Also, when Han is telling Rey and Finn (that is Finn, yes?) about the Jedi, it might seem that although they know about the great war, the part about Luke and DV were not widely known. And why would they be? The Jedi were all but extinct. Nobody except H & L knew that Luke was a Jedi. It looks like they kept that quiet and Luke did not open a Jedi school either. And it always bothered me that in the AU, everybody knows DV is L & L's dad. It seems that here, nobody knows. And maybe nobody knows L & L are bro and sis. Or maybe nobody knows about H & L's relationship (after they blew up Alderaan and used her family against her, maybe H & L are a secret, like Anakin and Padme.) And that means that kids might be born and raised in secret too.
But, hey. It's a trilogy. And I recently read that it looks like the big 3 are in episode 8 as well, but we'll see.
And where WAS Luke? He's Luke Freakin' Skywalker. Maybe he has to rescue Han or Rey? Maybe certain kids don't know they have an Uncle Luke who is a Jedi? Good Lord, they're going to do it aren't they? They're going to make him a hermit like Obi-Wan. But they could have at least shown him. I wonder if he's going to train Rey & Finn?
At least we got the hug. Now I'm all excited.

    1. Hey Ruby Red! where did you hear that the big 3 are in episode VIII? I hope so - that would mean they aren't killing Han off...(fingers crossed)

      Delete
    2. I don't know where she saw it, but a few months ago the casting call was released for Episode VIII and it listed the big 3 as returning. Now, whether it means they actually ARE for real returning, could be another story all together, but they were on that list.

Amazingly, I believe they are going to start shooting VIII soon, aren't they? I mean, this movie comes out only 18 months after VII. I'm not sure I can handle this level of hype and anticipation a mere 18 months later, but then again I don't think I'll be quite as worried about certain things as a lot of questions will have already been answered.

    3. gotcha...;)

but i'm feeling waaaay better about all of this now. They will definitely be married and still together, with the focus on a wayward child. You know I've over-analyzed this a million times, lol

  10. You know, for the first time I'm having serious doubts about Rey's parentage. But also, for the first time, I'm having hopes for the status of Han and Leia's relationship. So I'm happy. I'll trade a kid for an intact couple. No doubt. :-)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Doubtful already? I'm still not sure, but holding out hope. I would also trade a kid for an intact couple, though.

Added a gif of the unparalleled best moment in the trailer.

      Delete
    2. Intact couple would be the best. But curious if there is a new republic style government. Where's Mon Mothma? And if Han and Leia are together, my money is on they are, did the Rebellion just let them go off to run some type of protection group or off on their own. Looks like the Rebellion never stopped and I've seen merchadise to that effect too. Sorry if going on too much. Trailer has got me to thinking.

Btw, I'm kind of digging Kylo Ren. He's pretty scary so this could be super cool. Darth Maul is pretty cool looking, but never found him or Darth Sidious all that particularly scary or dangerous. My 9 year old could have figured out their plot to take over the Galaxy. :) Part of the OT that got me was you were scared of Vader and really needed to defeat him. The threat felt very real and drew me in (among other things).

      Delete
    3. Mon Mothma could just me old or dead. There are actual books now published and stuff, and the New Republic is or at least was for sure a thing. So, it is not like they are just still Rebels. Kylo could be good. Darth Maul was sort of silly, I guess. I don't know, at this point I just want to see it!

      Delete
    4. Yeah, I think Mon Mothma is probably dead by this time. I'd say she was well into her fifties in ROTJ, so thirty plus years later it's a possibility she's passed away.

      Delete
    5. Forgot to add, I'd also rather have them still together with no children rather than apart for years WITH children. No question about that.

      Delete
    6. It's amazing, that one-second snippet of Han and Leia is already pulling at my heart strings, and I'm not even aware of the context. Well played, trailer.

      Delete
    7. I don't think it is even a full second, which makes it even crazier how emotional I think a lot of us got over seeing it.

      Delete
    8. Check some of the reaction vids on YouTube, there are tons of them and that millisecond of Han and Leia has even big, burly guys with beards crying like babies! Everyone seems to have been affected by that moment, it's quite amazing. Can you imagine how we are all going to be watching the actual MOVIE. It will be insane!

      Delete
    9. I haven't watched any but now of course I'm totally going to have to be doing that today.

      Delete
    10. I think it is really awesome that 'non-shippers' are totally into the millisecond moment between Han and Leia. All the articles I've read have stated that that is like the most popular part of the final trailer.

I bet that Disney/Abrams anticipated that reaction as well, especially since Abrams has said he didn't want to do anything to alienate the original fans. I think we can take a deep breath and exhale about worries about them being estranged.

      Delete
    11. Have you seen all of the internet articles about the trailer? Everyone just loves that shot of Han and Leia. On Twitter, the Han and Leia fans have been rejoicing.

      Delete
  11. I loved it. And yes, the Han and Leia emotional embrace was the best. We don't know what context it has yet, though. It looks like an "end-of-the-movie" shot to me, but who knows? I think that they're together based on clues from the "Moving Target" book and the poster.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I don't think that their relationship/possible marriage is a secret, however. There are 2 people in the background staring at them with lots of troops around. They're just apart from the others to have a moment by themselves, I think.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yep, I replayed the trailer for the 50th time. I heard the Leia/Han theme. Their romance is going to be a big part of the movie, I think.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Ack. But isn't Leia the one who spoke "The Force. It's calling to you. Just let it in." ????

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't know that it was. But could be.

      Delete
    2. actually I thought it was Leia's voice asking Rey "who are you" at the beginning.

      Delete
    3. I thought it was Lupita saying the whole Force is calling to you part.

Not sure about the who are you.

      Delete
    4. Listening again, the "Who are you?" doesn't sound like Leia at all to me. I think it could just be someone random.

      Delete
    5. I did the same thing. Multiple listens. Not Carrie Fisher. Not Gwendolyn. Possibly Daisy--saying it to Finn.

Current theory: Rey Solo, Finn Skywalker. Cousins. Luke either already dead or reclusive, to scared to teach his son or sister. The 'its all true" is an early in the movie flashback of Han talking to Rey, bedtime story turns into real discussion. She gets older, restless. Things falling apart with stubborn factions of the Empire resisting. She goes looking for Luke. Finn isn't actually a stormtrooper or unknown to them. He does the disguise thing to sneak into ranks.

All just musings. But I'm liking the trailer reversal the more I think about it.

      Delete
    6. I still think maybe someone random, like the woman in TPM who said, "Storm's comin', Ani, better get home quick!"

Interesting theory. I am thinking Finn is not related to any of them by blood. I'd prefer it if not EVERYONE was related to Luke and Leia. 2 of the new leads, sure. But 3 or even 4 seems like a bit much. Also, you forget that in the trailer Finn says, "I was raised to do one thing...." and the trailer at least leads us to believe that he is talking about being a stormtrooper. I could be wrong there.

Is it December yet? I'm not even going to care about Christmas at all because I'm going to be too busy just thinking about this.

      Delete
    7. 99.9% certain the voice over lady on the trailer is Lupita, who is playing a character called Maz Kanata.

      Delete
    8. Zyra, that 'one thing" stuck out to me too, because that's a classic suggestion. Look at the vid without sound, he's not necessarily a stormtrooper at all. Just a guy in discuss to get in somewhere he's not supposed to be. (Leslie again, by the way. I'm just signed in on another blogger account and don't want to bother entering info.)

  15. Holy crap, ladies, that was an awesome trailer. That hug had my squealing like crazy... But man, she is so sad. What's up with that? It does look quite dark but I'm sure there will be some comic relief in there. Luke's absence is very telling though. He wasn't even mentioned!

Need to watch it about another million times now to fully digest this, but I'm starting to look forward to this movie a lot more now :)

  16. everyone at my house had the "where is Luke?" reaction while I was quietly having the "Han and Leia hug" reaction.

  17. I did only just realize this morning, Luke IS in it. It's just that it's the same shot of him from the teaser putting his hand on Artoo. Which is almost the same as not having him in it.

  18. It was election night nationwide in Canada yesterday but while the TV was on with the results coming out, I was checking on my Ipad if the trailer was available. 5 seconds after it was online, I was watching it and didn't care anymore who was going to lead my country (lol) OMG to see Han and Leia together again before my eyes after more than 30 years... what a treat!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think the thing about Leia in that moment that really gets me/us is that is the most sad and distraught we've ever seen her. Alderaan blowing up? Han going into potential death of carbonite? Learning Vader is her father? Nope, she still didn't look as sad as she does in this trailer.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's the look I have when something is wrong with one of my kids...just saying

      Delete
    2. Yep. And I suspect that having it at the end of the trailer is to throw us off. What if Rey has gone to find Uncle Luke's saber, truth, whatever. This is the goodbye when Han goes after her. Rey is in the forest too in one of the shots. So think of the whole trailer in reverse order.

      Delete
    3. as a mom of six kiddies, I totally agree with you Scruffy...BINGO...

      Delete
    4. Yeah, I would agree too. To me it looks like we held it together this long and now everything is failing apart look. Or not again look.

      Delete
    5. I might argue she looks more distraught when Han goes into carbonite. But that's just me. She was grief stricken at the time and it showed. Part of what gets me during the carbonite scene is the look on Leia's face.

      Delete
    6. Thinking about it, yeah, I'd say you're probably right. She really was torn apart when Han was frozen. That was the most distraught we ever saw her in the OT, when she was losing her man. Very powerful scene. And here in this new trailer I think it's something equally as gut wrenching, so I think it's something to do with their kid(s). That looks like a mother who is frantically worried about her child.

      Delete
    7. I still think she looks more distraught there. She looked very sad, but I also felt like there was a sense of anger and determination during the carbonite scene, and I never saw any hint of tears there. Here, to me at least, it looks like there may be tears in her eyes and she looks sort of..... helpless. Like she knows there is nothing she can do. That's just kind of how I'm seeing it.

      Delete
    8. Interesting cause that's how I see the carbonite scene. I saw huge tears in here eyes after he was frozen. And she definitely looked helpless to me until after Lando rescued them.

  22. So of course there are a zillion articles and posts all over the internet about this today. One thing I'm finding interesting, and pretty cool, is that the image of Leia hugging Han seems to be a favorite for many, not just the die hard Han and Leia fans among us. That's pretty cool.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ok, so after watching this a bunch of times, I am consoled in the fact that Han and Leia are together. But the trailer's dialogue is so fragmented, you can't really determine for sure anything. I mean, when Rey says to Han that she's heard stories - at first you think 'wow - I thought she was Han and Leia's daughter; guess not;"...But really, that opinion could change by preceding dialogue we aren't aware of, something to the effect..."Dad, stop lying to me and tell me what the hell is going on; I've heard stories..." Maybe Han and Leia decided not to train their kids in the ways of the Force for fear they'd turn to the dark side. (though one of them has anyway, on the sly)

so really, who knows what the heck is going to happen! I was relieved to see the embrace between Han and Leia (except for the fact that she is so distraught - probably because of a wayward kid) ,and now I'm certain that Han and Leia are together and not estranged or just 'good friends'. Nope. those two were too passionate for that. Either they'd be together or hate each others guts...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I totally agree with fragmented dialog and it still may not be what we think it is. Or maybe she knew that Jedi existed and stuff but didn't know there was more to it? It's all so confusing.

That was a hug of two very bonded people, not strangers. Right? I do still hope they share some good banter at some point, though.

      Delete
    2. Absolutely, Zyra. If you are estranged from someone, and even if you are thrown into an emotional situation, you would not share an embrace like that. I agree about the banter; I hope (and suspect) that there will be some lighter moments between them.

  24. oops I forget, the Love theme was played also...indicating their relationship is not platonic

  25. I saw on another board some speculating that Rey crying over a grey hair person that it's Han dying. Others say it's Finn. I guess it's too brief to really make out the image.

    Replies
    1. And I've seen other people thinking it's Chewie. I kind of think it's nobody and she isn't over a body at all, only because it seems like a huge plot point to potentially reveal in a trailer like that.

      Delete
    2. I have a bad feeling about this....

      Delete
    3. It's Finn. I wasn't sure at first, but someone posted a lightened version of that shot so you can see what's going on. You can clearly see the red stripe on Finn's jacket on the person that is lying infront of Rey. So panic over, it's not Han.

      Delete
    4. It also makes sense that it would be Finn, since it is snowing in the scene and since Finn apparently fights Kylo on that snowy planet and we haven't seen evidence of anyone else there, he makes sense.

  27. Hellooooou!!! I'm coming back from my Star Wars Quarantine for a few moments, navigating through the page with a tablecloth covering most of the screen until I found the comments section.

Just wanted to tell you girls (and guys) that I am going to London to watch the movie on the 17th of December, at 00:01 with my best friend (she lives there). First ever session, it seems that only 3 theaters in London have that session.

AND of course, we will camp on the cinema door to see the red carpet.

If the movie ends up being a disappointment, we will have fun talking about everything that sucks. If not, we will buy tickets for the 3D version.

OH MY GOD I'M SO EXCITEEED!!! Bye!!!!

  28. Someone tallied up all of the footage we have seen so far of this movie, and it is about 3 minutes. That's pretty crazy, isn't it? I'm actually not complaining, I just want to see it as a movie. But for a movie that we have been anticipating for nearly 3 years since the big day Disney bought Lucasfilm, that's pretty insane.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hi again. I definitely think that Han and Leia are together. The poster and the trailer confirmed it for me. I honestly think that that shot of Leia and Han is Han coming home from battle and Leia thought he died. I think that it was surprise to Leia that he came home, and now he's consoling her about it. He rocks her as if to say, "It's okay. I'm here." I have a theory as to why his face was cut off in that shot. If I get permission to post it, I'll do so.

    2. It's not a spoiler. It's a theory.

      Delete
    3. You can speculate all you want as long as you aren't coming here telling us stuff you read in a leaked script or something.

Interesting theory, and it'd be really nice if that were true. BUT, I don't think it is. You can't show things in a trailer that come too late in the movie, or give something major away. If this was a shot of Han coming back after some bad battle that she thought he had died, I don't think it would be in the trailer, because then in the movie we might be watching some intense battle, but since we wouldn't have seen that scene yet we can relax a little bit because hey, we already know that Han made it because we saw that shot in the trailer.

It will be interesting though if his head will be cut off in that shot in the movie or if they framed it that way specifically for the trailer. It isn't really common practice to frame shots differently for trailers, just take shots as they appear in the movie and cut them together.

    1. Yes. Very. I will not search for confirmation on this before I see it. It's funny, from the moment they announced this and we talked about Harrison maybe coming back (which I never in a million years thought he would) I said that I wouldn't mind if they killed him. Now that we are so close, I really, really don't want him to die in this movie. But I have strong suspicions that he will.

    2. (Zolo77) Thanks!

I'm not sure where this year has gone actually... I swear it was July, like, yesterday!

  34. I can't believe it's almost November either. Seemed like just last week it was still many many months before this movie was coming out, and yet now I've got my tickets and there is nothing left to do but wait, and not all that long, and re-watch the first movies.

Congratulations on the wedding! Does your husband share your love of Star Wars? Or at the very least, tolerate it? ;) That seems like a fair excuse. I haven't gotten married and I've written nothing, but I at least did not abandon a story in the middle to torture the readers ;)

Glad to hear you have some new stuff coming for us!

Oh Zyra, torture is such a nasty word! I prefer, heighten the anticipation factor x10000000! hehe

I'm working on it now. I swear!

  36. I've spent a ridiculous amount of time staring at that two second clip over the last 2 weeks, and the result spilled out of me tonight over at ff dot net. be kind.
