First, sorry for the lengthy absence. All I can really say is that life sometimes gets in the way of the fun, silly stuff you often enjoy purely for your own amusement. I hope that you haven't given up and please don't hesitate to comment on anything as of course it's always good to keep the discussions coming and keep people interested. That was the whole point of the blog, to pull together the fans so we know we're not alone and to keep people coming back for more. So hopefully that will still be accomplished.
In the mean time, while we don't have any particularly interesting new posts I'll use an idea I believe Claire gave us, which is to throw up a hot topic and let people discuss it. And since it makes things easy, I'll go with the current poll question. When do you think they got married? Or did they? Although I think everyone who has voted so far agrees that they did. I know I've read the rumors that there was a scene shot but never used that they got married at the end of ROTJ. First of all, I don't believe that rumor. Second of all, as ideally romantic and cute as that all sounds, I don't think it makes any sense. I of course think they got married, but come on, they haven't even been on a real date yet. I think they'd wait at least a little bit before jumping into marriage.
So what are all of your thoughts on the subject? And you can disregard the EU completely if you want, or even say that you think how it happened there is how it should've gone. Even if that book sucked.
Firstly, I absolutely adore that pic. I've seen it before, but it is an unusual one, and one that you don't see all that often. It's just unbelievably cute.
ReplyDeleteI think they got married between one and two years after ROTJ. I would imagine that immediately after Endor there was probably a lot of things that needed to be done, particularly in forming a new government and "mopping" up after the Empire. So I think everyone would be busy with one thing or the other and there wouldn't b a great deal of time for planning weddings. After all this had settled down a bit then I think they would then think seriously about getting married.
I agree that straight after Endor is far too soon. They haven't really had a chance to spend time as a normal couple at all, and I think the time after ROTJ would be them "finding their feet" as it were, and just enjoying being together.
I also think 4 years, as in the EU, is totally unrealistic. But you have to remember that there's even some confusion there. Bare in mind that the Jedi Prince series, which was published slightly before Wolverton's horror show, has them eloping a lot lot earlier in the timeline. But then of course COPL blew that idea out of the water.
I've heard the rumours about the supposed wedding at the end of ROTJ. I also don't believe it was filmed. It may have been discussed but I think it's unlikely it made it into any of the scripts. If it was filmed then I'm pretty positive that someone somewhere would have leaked a pic by now.
Oh and thanks Zyra for using my idea. :)
ReplyDeleteThis poll has attracted a lot of votes, so hopefully everyone has plenty to say on this one!!
I'm with Claire on this one - They probably waited a year or two to get their lives straightened out before getting married. They also have-not actually been together for very long - It feels like a long time because of the years they spent arguing before ESB and that asteroid, but then Han spent a year in the carbonite. I think that although by this point they have sorted out their feelings for each other, they wouldn't want to get married after not actually spending that much time together as a couple.
ReplyDeleteI've heard those rumors to... I kind of doubt it was filmed, but if it turns up next time the films are re released... I will definitely not complain! (For one thing, It would kind the screw up That Book)
Yeah, that's quite possibly my favorite picture of them. Because it's candid and there aren't a ton of candid pics of those two being so intimate like that. As I've said before, my theory on that is because they didn't want to arouse suspicion as to what was really going on behind the scenes because Carrie was all over everyone else on set for the most part. But anyway....
ReplyDeleteYes, I think when I was 13 I would've said, oh, they get married right away! But as you said, they haven't had a second to be anything close to a normal couple, so I think it would take them some time to work that out. I actually think it would be a big adjustment for them when they first started living together. Not that I don't think it would all work out, just that it's strange to go from independent, do everything your own way to suddenly sharing space and constantly compromising. So there would be some tension there until they got used to it. I said within a year I think but I think it really depends on what kind of wedding they decided to have. And yes, four years is crazy. I don't think they would've waited that long. I think from pretty early on they knew they'd stay together even if they maybe weren't immediately talking about marriage.
And what about a proposal? I always kind of felt like Han wouldn't really plan that out. I think it would just kind of happen at some point.
See that's another thing the EU totally screwed up. We didn't get Han proposing to Leia. Instead they just decided to get wed because of that stupid bet they had in COPL. Even in the Jedi Prince books, he doesn't actually propose to her, she's one step ahead of him and guesses that that is what he's going to say.
DeleteI really really wanted just a nice normal proposal. But nooooo, that's just way too much to ask.
I know! He might have not planned it completely, maybe at least made it nice without overkilling it. I could see the proposal just happening too. But feel jipped that it was a reaction to events and not a natural progression.
DeleteI always thought that his proposal would have been something that was kind of a spur of the moment thing - he had thought about it, but then it just kind of slipped out at some random moment...
DeleteI can't imagine their proposal in a traditional way! :D They aren't even a traditional couple. ;) I would think they just discussed about it (in bed, after sex?) and then decided to get married.
DeleteI agree with you about 1-2 years after Endor. But on the other hand, I don't want to think their life like it is in EU. It's so crazy that no wonder it took so long to get married. They don't even have time to be together, the other one is always captured. And they don't even raise their own children. :6
"As I've said before, my theory on that is because they didn't want to arouse suspicion as to what was really going on behind the scenes because Carrie was all over everyone else on set for the most part."
-> Sorry that I ask, but since English is far from my native language... Does this mean Carrie was fed up with all of them? I'm just so curious about it! :)
No, not what I was saying. What I meant was, judging from so many photos of her with most cast and crew, she is a pretty fun, affectionate person. She liked fooling around and having fun for the camera and there are pictures of her making kissy faces with Mark Hammil or draping herself over Irvin Kershner or Gary Kurtz. But there aren't pictures of her like that with Harrison unless they are "being Han and Leia." So my feeling is that she didn't act like that with him in public for the most part, because they were probably having some serious fun behind the scenes, and they didn't want people to think that they were. So they tried to keep a distance when out in public. It's all just a theory though, we don't know for sure.
DeleteOk, thanks for "translation"! :D Yes, that's true, I just didn't think about it before you said it, she fools around in pictures with everyone else but Harrison! But I've understood they DID have something going on behind the scenes. Maybe it was even Carrie herself who said that in some interview in Youtube?! Not sure about that, though. And somewhere I have read or heard that the cast wasn't always sure if they were training Han&Leia kiss or something else... ;)
DeleteCarrie hasn't actually admitted to anything, HOWEVER, she doesn't really need to because she's dropped some very big hints, enough to convince me that they almost certainly had a thing going on.
DeleteThey didn't exactly get married because of the bet in COPL, but because they wanted to... Anyway, it's a stupid book for the most part, totally weird. Leia tells Han that she will always love him for who he is, and then a few pages later, after the assassination attempt, she suddenly seems to forget all about her love for Han and kisses Isolder. And then Han has to win her heart! When the f-ck did he lose it? Totally weird. And Leia is totally cold and you wonder if she actually enjoys having two guys fighting over her. Also, she doesn't seem to be disturbed by the fact that Isolder tried to bribe Han into leaving her alone. Also, Isolder is a giant douche because he doesn't give a f-ck about what Leia wants. He wants to "steal her". Gross. And yeah, Han kidnaps her. That's also kind of gross. :P
DeleteI think they married a year/two years after Endor ^^
ReplyDeleteLater than that, I think it would be too late :L
And yeah, ROTJ was meant to end with Han and Leia's wedding, but... Ah, I read about it somewhere, hold on.
Nope, can't find it. But I remember that it was something that they decided they couldn't use it because such and such :L
Either way, I don't think they filmed it though, there would be some pictures around the net from it ^^
See, I've never seen any evidence of it which is why I don't believe it was actually filmed or anything like that. Every other rumored thing there were pics of, like the sandstorm scene. I'd love to see evidence of it. This is the same reason I think that Harrison never posed for Playgirl, which I also heard rumored.
DeleteThat said, for a long time I thought it was only a rumor that there was video from Temple of Doom of a practical joke they played on Harrison while he was being whipped, where instead of the big bearded guy Barbara Streisand came in to do the whipping, and then Carrie came in and threw herself in front of him protectively. But, well, then one day there that video was on the internet. So I could be wrong. But until I SEE it...
I'd always heard that the reason the wedding wasn't used in ROTJ was because Lucas felt it would take the emphasis away from Vader and Luke. Which, I suppose it would have.
DeleteI don't really buy it either. It could be that there was some draft of the script with it thrown it there, but who knows. If it was shot, the come on and lay it on us, Lucas!
DeleteLol, I don't think I've ever heard that Playgirl rumor...what a shame. ;)
I don't doubt that it was at least an idea they floated around. But really, that movie had nothing to do with Han and Leia. They were doing some stuff but it was all about the conclusion of Luke's journey there. Han and Leia are barely characters with feelings in that movie, they just break into the bunker and fight a lot and blow it up. So, yeah, a wedding at the end wouldn't have really added much aside from a really nice visual for us and some nice pics.
DeleteHadn't heard the Playgirl rumor? He was on the cover once in the 80s... fully clothed in his ESB jacket as Han Solo because I guess there was an article on him in there. I'm not psycho fan enough to have bought it. But yes, there was some rumor that he had posed before he was famous wearing just a tool belt. I maintain that if such a thing had happened there WOULD be photographic evidence easily found on the internet, but there is not. I mean, that's what I've been told anyway by other people who have checked... ;) Even if it never happened it's not so difficult to conjure up your own mental image of that one. Maybe he did that once or twice for Leia when he was working. Or just his blaster harness :)
Holster, I mean. I knew I was using the wrong word there, but I think you all know what I meant!
DeleteThe Luke/Vader thing wasn't near as interesting as Han and Leia. :) I'm just saying.
DeleteThanks for the visual, Zyra. :)
Harness?! Zyra maybe that is exactly what your subconscious meant. Tee Hee.
DeleteNow that's a visual!!
DeleteThat vision has set me up for the day, girls!! :). Thanks!!
DeleteThe thing that makes me laugh about the Playgirl thing is that every time it pops up there's someone who jumps in and says "oh yeah, I've seen it, I've got that issue stashed away somewhere", and they say they will scan the pics if they find it. But guess what? No one has EVER found it. How convenient.
The story surrounding it is that sometime after American Graffiti but long before SW, Harrison was a little strapped for cash, and those film roles were not exactly rolling in, so he agreed to pose nude to get a little extra money. So he did, and apparently he has a rather impressive set of tools!!!
On his belt, of course. What else did you think I was talking about? ;)
So maybe some truth to the playgirl thing. But in the age of the net can't believe those pictures haven't shown up. Think this calls for some investigative work. If I find anything I will share
DeleteI wish you luck in your quest, but I'm not hopeful you will find anything, unfortunately.
DeleteBut I was thinking. Would anyone that had a copy of this magazine actually have kept it up until the Internet age? Would there still be copies around? I mean we're talking about something that was published between 1973 and 1976, or there abouts, that featured a nude pic of a relatively unknown actor at that time. Would it be worth keeping? Haa, well I guess that depends on how impressive those tools really were, eh?
I suppose though, it only needs for one person to have kept it and it would be plastered all over the net. Which of course, it isn't.
I gotta admit I hold little hope in my quest as well. Just believe those pictures would have surfaced again if nothing else dug up by those tabloid folks. But you make good points with the time frame and a little known actor.
DeleteHey let's get those Picker Dudes on the history channel to look. They find everything.
Yes, you're right. I'm sure the tabloids would have found it at some point.
DeleteI love that show
DeleteI really don't think this is true. Aside from the lack of evidence it has also never been brought up in an interview or anything, although plenty of other embarrassing things have been (Star Wars Holiday Special, anyone?) and being such a private person, well, I'd think he'd keep his privates to himself! Well, him and whoever is current wife happens to be. He earned the money being a carpenter when acting wasn't cutting it. As much as I'd enjoy seeing such a pic!
DeleteAnd for those of you looking, google search with safesearch turned off, especially when looking for something like that, is a dangerous thing.
Is the practical joke for Harrison in Temple of Doom somewhere in Youtube? Would love to find it! :D
DeleteWell, now we know there was no scene with them getting married... Was it some Carrie Fisher's show where she answered questions and told there was nothing like that but she had suggested it. I guess it was here on this blog...
It would have been lovely to see them getting married in the Ewok Village, so happy and relieved and in the middle of friends. :D Peace and Love! :D But that's not what I'd really think would have happened even in my mind. She has just told him that Luke is her brother and that she's "available"! xD And I really don't think Leia is a person that makes such a big decision spontaneously without considering everything.
Well, the Temple of Doom prank WAS on YouTube, but I've just searched for it again and it says it's been removed due to "copyright issues".
DeleteWhat a bummer!
To be fair, it's very very bad quality and you can't actually see much at all. You certainly can't see that it's Carrie.
I heard the same rumor but have never seen anything to prove it. And that's why I wanted to read COPL cause it was about them getting married. Who wouldn't want to read about that? But then I got that drivel. Yeesh.
ReplyDeleteAnyhow, I put two years after Endor. I think they'd need time to plan the wedding and such, but could be as close to only a year after. Four years after seemed so excessive. And if Han was so worried about losing Leia to Luke (or anyone), then you'd think he wouldn't dawdle.
Now I would have liked to seen it earlier than that. If it were me, I would have snagged him up ASAP, like at the fleet before Endor. I don't think it would happen, but would have been something. You either know or you don't know. Not sure there is much in between when thinking about getting married. I knew pretty quickly with my husband.
I read a story that was five things that didn't happen in Star Wars and one of them was Han proposing to Leia in ESB. Not likely, but soooo incredibly sweet.
I love that picture of Han and Leia, I printed it awhile ago and keep it on the "backside" of my teacher/mom planner binder (thought that was an appropriate spot). I wonder what he is saying to her as he has his arm draped around her? Hmmmm, the imagination ponders........
ReplyDeleteYes, it stinks when real life interferes with the fun stuff. Too much real, not enough frivolous in life. I've got to work on that.
I don't really have anything new to add regarding when they got married. I agree with what has already been said by everybody, two years sounds about right. One thing I have wondered about though, do they wear wedding bands? I have not read much reference to wedding rings? Just curious.
Good question on the rings. Didn't he give Leia a ring in the Jedi Prince series? I could be wrong on that, and I don't have my book with me to check.
DeleteI kind of like the idea that they wear rings. Just something symbolic of it. And nothing elaborate, either. I don't picture Leia wearing excessively ornate jewelery. But I see them wearing simple bands. I threw that in on one of my stories that he was wearing a ring.
Good question about wedding bands. Maybe someone knows. Not sure a guy working with his hands would want to wear one. Too much of a hazard.
DeleteGood question, Seams!
DeleteAccording to the Union comic series, which is about Luke and Mara's wedding, there is reference to Threepio having been the ring bearer at Han and Leia's wedding. So if we take that as canon, then yes they do wear rings.
There is also a Topps collectible card that features a pic of Leia clearly wearing a wedding ring, although that's the only artwork I can recall that shows it.
Yes he does give her an engagement ring in the Jedi Prince books.
DeleteI like the idea of rings too, even though being a galaxy far far away they probably would have different wedding customs. But yeah, I just love the idea of rings.
Isn't there a fic where Leia has "I love you" engraved on her ring, and Han has "I know" on his? I LOVE that!
Ok, just did a bit of searching on Wookiepedia and the picture of Leia posing with the newborn twins (the one with the green rebel alliance symbol as the background) seems to show a ring on her left hand.
DeleteThere are "I Love You/I Know" rings available for sale in real life, I've seen them all over Pinterest.
I would tend to agree about a simple wedding band. Plus, ever try to throw a punch with a big gemstone ring on your hand, it hurts:)
So if Han gives her an engagement ring, I'm assuming he proposed to her? I haven't read the Jedi Prince series. Am I missing anything?
That pic of her with the twins is the one I was talking about. It was a pic done for one of the collectible card sets. She definitely has a ring in that picture.
DeleteNo he doesn't actually propose in the Jedi Prince books. They are talking and Leia says something like "you were going to ask me to marry you weren't you?" or something along those lines, I don't have the book handy, so that's probably way off, but you get the general idea.
Can't say you've really missed anything by not having read those books. Zyra reviewed them a few months back in one of the Lesser Known EU bits.
Love that pic of her with the twins. I like the idea of rings, but who knows what they're customs are.
DeleteOk apparently my computer is not liking things right now. Lost two posts.
DeleteI like the idea of them wearing rings as well, but who knows what they're customs are. But I wonder if Han would want to if he works with his hands a lot.
Oh, I love that pic of her with the twins. So sweet Leia as mom.
DeleteI think them getting married on Endor is a little unrealistic and silly. Leia just got some pretty traumatic news, I don't think she'd be in the right head space. I also don't really see the problem with them waiting a few years. In my circle of friends/generation of my family, most people are together AT LEAST five years before they get married.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on the waiting. From my totally subjective perspective, I'm currently about the age Leia would be at the end of RoTJ and I've been with my S.O. for, well, almost as long as Han and Leia would have known each other at the end of RoTJ. And, although we both know that we're in it for the long haul and basically are eventually going to get married, we've kind of got a lot of stuff going on without having just defeated an evil empire.
DeleteLong story short, it seems totally realistic to me that they'd wait a while. Putting the galaxy back together would take a while and I think both are heroes would be working out their places in the new order. Marriage seems to me like something they'd get around to eventually. Possibly long after everyone around them has forgotten that their not married! Even with Leia being a princess. William waited until his late 20s and he and Kate were seriously involved for years...
Yeah, I definitely don't agree on the Endor wedding thing. I'd say at least two years later or whenever things have settled down a bit.
ReplyDeleteAnd yay, my favorite picture!
OK time to throw a differnt train of thought in here. I gotta admit I am an old married woman, but when I met my husband I knew really soon that we would be married. I think we were married 6 months after we met. So I am thinking a wedding on Endor is possible. I think after all that had happened neither one of them would want to wait. They wasted two years fighting. Then Leia lost Han to carbonite. I think that time waiting and working to get him back would have cemented in her the desire to not lose anymore time. The emotional event for Han being saved by Leia and his friends. Given a second chance he would want to jump in immediately. Then surviving another huge battle with such large consequences. I just think pulling all those emotional events together would have made the marriage on Endor a perfect ending. Screw Luke and Vader. Everybody is there, big celebration, perfect timing for a wedding.
ReplyDeleteI do see rings also. However I don't see Han always wearing his given his mechanical tasks, but I do see Leia wearing hers. No gems I agree.
Oh by the way love that picture they are so sweet.
OK gotta check out this Jedi Prince series. This is new to me.
Zyra no worries on life getting in the way. It is just reality. Everybody understands.
I can see that happening. Anything is better than how the EU depicted their wedding and events leading up to it.
DeleteGood points. Thanks for another point of view. I could see Han not wanting to waste another opportunity. And I didn't know my husband long either.
DeleteSome interesting points, indyLis, yeah, I can see where you're coming from. They have been through so much, so why not seize the day I suppose. I do think that even though they have not been "together" in that sense for very long, they would both know that they had found "the one", and would know that they would spend the rest of their lives together.
DeleteBut you know, I think having Ewoks at your wedding would be a total bummer!! Wouldn't it?
I can see Han not really liking the idea of wearing a ring, it just isn't "him", but I think Leia would want him to wear it, and so he does. I still picture them both with rings.
I can definitely see this side of it, too. I don't doubt that already at that point they knew they wanted to be together forever, and given all that they'd already been through, they could quite easily take the "why wait?" approach. I actually tend to go back and forth on this one. I suppose it would also depend on exactly what happens right after they leave Endor.
DeleteGood point Claire. Ewoks at your wedding. Don't think so. Furry little dwarfs; not to mention the mess all that fur would cause. Fur in the punch bowl, fur in the cake, and fur in unmentionable spots (ok you figure out those spots ).
DeleteLOL. I would hope they would be keeping those unmentionable spots covered up until AFTER the wedding!
DeleteAlthough, there's always the risk of Ewok fur in the honeymoon hut!
Best spend the wedding night on the Falcon then!
I kind of feel like the ewoks would be curious about the wedding hut... which could be awkward...
DeleteThey can only hope ewoks have heard of door locks.
DeleteI agree that they wouldn't want to waste any more time and that they are sure that they want to be together forever, but that doesn't mean they would get married straight away. Marriage isn't what makes a relationship real. These do don't need a ring to prove that they belong together - but they would get married eventually. Going to bed? Probably immediately. Although not an Endor, an Ewok hut isn't a very private place, and the Falcon... Not very cozy is it?
DeleteEwok huts don't appear to even have doors!!!
ReplyDeleteYup, it's back to the Falcon for the wedding night, for sure.
Hey this has been fun. Great topic and so many folks jumping in and sharing their views.
ReplyDeleteLook we are still commenting. I think we have now spanned three days.
Woo hoo. Go team
My passionate hatred for the ewoks is another reason for no endor wedding. Also, would Leia wear that baffling tribal dress? I'm sure she wouldn't want that captured in photos or holos or whatever you call them.
ReplyDeleteForget that, where the hell did that dress even come from?!?!
DeleteDidn't you know the Ewoks actually made Leia sized dresses for a living? And they always kept a stash of them just incase any small, feisty Alderaanian Princesses crashed their speeder bikes nearby. :)
DeleteI feel as if this response is incredibly late, but I've been so busy that I didn't have time to check my blogger to look at these posts!
ReplyDeleteI personally think that it would have been about two years (at most) after ROTJ, because it would give enough time for the New Republic to be settled, and they would have had to relocate, so that makes sense too.
Really random, but the background picture is really distracting me, because Han's expression is adorable. =)
Anyway, where was I? Oh, right, two years. It seems like about the right amount of time for them, and when I started Courtship (wish I hadn't) I couldn't believe it was FIVE years...I was like, "What in the Galaxy?" I couldn't believe it...and I feel it was way too long.
We'll see how long it ends up being in my fanfiction when I get around to writing it though (I'm currently in the middle of a 'Trip to Bespin' fic.) =)
Yes, they did wait far too long to get married. And remember, that even then, if Prince Fabulous had not reared his ugly head then they probably wouldn't have got married until even later. The only reason they got married in COPL was because of that silly bet they had about Leia falling in love with Han after a week, which is probably the biggest insult to their relationship in the EU.
DeleteOf course, I should have put "Prince Fabulous reared his GORGEOUS head" there, shouldn't I ?
DeleteFall in love with him in a week, yeah... Except she told him in the beginning, after the proposal from Prince Fabulous, how much she loved him, and then suddenly she didn't and he had to try and "win her back"... Totally stupid. And yeah, if a guy tried to bribe my boyfriend to leave me I would tell him to go and fuck himself, not be charmed by his awesome abs or whatever. I could buy it if Leia was willing to sacrifice her own happiness for peace, but she seemed to actually like the slime. Furthermore, she didn't even realise what she was feeling or what her motives were. How could she not know? But it was a nice moment when Han was going to be a suicide bomber. :D
DeleteJust finished watching ROTJ and have to say these look like two people who aren't going to wait. Not to get married or to "get it on." That's some kiss they share after she tells him Luke is her brother. And they hug each other for dear life during the celebration. They look like they won't last a few days let alone a few years. Surprised they didn't snatch each other up when they could and not waste any time. Just my opinion.
ReplyDeleteThat hug makes me melt (hence why it's my avatar :)), he's holding her like he never wants to let go, and look at his expression, that's one happy, contented man. It's just a shame we get just a split second glimpse of that moment.
DeleteThey certainly appear to be in a very good place at the end of ROTJ, that much is clear.
No kidding. I would have been surprised if they hadn't hugged each other for quite a while, looking as content they do.
Delete
