Movie News That Needs to be Shared and Discussed

Some of you may have heard, but if you didn't, there was an article published today in which Carrie confirmed that she will indeed be back as Princess Leia.  Mark has all but said so and there are somewhat unconfirmed reports about Harrison, but at this point it feels like a done deal.

All right, my intense fear and skepticism has morphed into unbridled excitement.  Are you kidding me?  We get to see Han and Leia on screen as a married couple?  Granted, an elderly married couple, but I would've bet a million dollars only a couple of months ago that something like this would never, ever happen.  Other unconfirmed rumors are that the movie focuses on their child and grandchild, but I'm leaving those open ended because that information is much more of a rumor as of yet.

This information also came after Carrie's somewhat publicized "breakdown" on a cruise ship in which people said she appeared drunk and more than a little crazy and apparently has been to the doctor to adjust her meds.  Apparently video of the "performance" is gone now but I saw it and honestly, to me, it just looked like Carrie being Carrie, but she seems okay now and this interview took place afterward so they will still let her be Leia.

In other, Harrison-related movie news, I just read that apparently he is going to be in Anchorman 2.  Anchorman is both ridiculous and absurdly hilarious and I am irrationally excited about Harrison playing a straight-laced news man in it, as apparently is his role.  I am loving the idea of seeing him do some comedy and break out like that.  The man is in 4 movies in 2013 as well as Star Wars.  Thank you for not drifting into obscurity in your golden years.

Seriously, I can't even sleep I'm so excited about all of this awesome movie news.  And I have to wait 2 more years to see the next Star Wars movie.

***Also, on an unrelated note, I just put word verification back on in order for you to be able to comment on posts.  Sorry to do that to you but after what, a week of leaving it a free-for-all, spam comments started flowing in at an alarming rate.  So I'll try this and see how it goes and if that fixes the issue, or perhaps go to having to register but no word verification and see if that's better.  Sorry again, but there were 5 new spam comments over the course of 5 minutes this morning and I'm sure it only would've gotten worse!

  1. I'm stoked. So's my granddaughter. She says she can't wait two years.

I blame her for my interest in writing about Han and Leia. So what if she's 6? :)

  2. If you're excited Zyra, then I think it's probably safe for all of us to get a little excited, right? :)

I'm a lot happier about this than I was, and I agree, it's just unbelievable that we are going to see Han and Leia on screen again, it's surreal, and I can't get my head round it at all. I would never ever have dreamed we would get more movies.

I've heard the "child and grandchild" rumours. Whilst we have to take them with a grain of salt it's worth pointing out that the "source" of that supposed leaked info announced JJ Abrams as director weeks before it was made official. So whether that lends any credibility to it, I don't know. Also many are saying that this is perhaps the biggest indication yet that the EU is being respected and we will get their two remaining descendents, Jaina and Allana, on screen. Of course it maybe a totally different child and grandchild, but I don't see the point in messing with what's already established.

    1. Oh my god, I'm sorry, but I hope they totally *don't* go the EU route. I'm one of those people who was never a big fan of it (although, my SW addiction led me to read a *ton* of it several years ago). I'd rather go clean slate with this. Have the movies be totally different than the books (making EU more AU, if you know what I mean). And I know that's risky, after all, just because Han and Leia are in the movies, how do we know they're gonna be married? They could've broken up after ROTJ for all we know (*shudder* I know, scary thought!). But still. I'll take my chances.

Am I in the minority on this? I'm just not a huge EU fan......

    2. I have seriously mixed feelings on whether or not they follow the EU. On one hand, of course it is awful that Han and Leia are now left with ONE of their three children. Seriously? That is beyond awful, regardless of anything else that happened. And of course a lot of random stuff throughout the EU was annoying on a milder level.

On the plus side, anyone who has read the more recent books knows that their relationship is stronger than ever. They're awesome together and still enjoy the banter and basically never leave each other's sides. I really couldn't ask for anything better for them from that standpoint. If we could have that minus the sons dying I'd be all for it.

That said, I'm terrified of what they might do to them if they changed things. Although it doesn't really make much sense to have them not be together. If they had split up but they're both in the movie, what, are we going to have a geriatric love story? Plus, let's just remember the spirit of the movies. Their love story was a big part of the original trilogy. It just feels like bad storytelling to jump ahead 40 years and suddenly be like, "Just kidding, they totally don't belong together at all and haven't seen each other in a LONG time."

So, I don't know. Devil you know is better than the devil you don't and that kind of thing.

    3. Good point! Hardly makes much sense to split them up now and it was a big part of empire bringing them together.

    4. I have to agree with Amara and Zyra. I hate a ton of the EU but I'm jumping on the better the devil you know band wagon and say I'd rather it follow the EU than do something totally horrfic to them. I can't see that happening anyway, I just can't. Sw is a fairy tale, and you don't put Cinderella and Prince Charming together and then split them up. Plus it negates their while relationship if after all they've been through they then break them apart. Anyway all the gossip I've heard says their kid/kids are going to be the heroes which to me indicates they must get married. I can't see them having a child out of wedlock.

    5. I've heard people mention a "partial" reboot of the established EU for the movie-verse. Basically keep the EU up to a certain point and then wipe it clean and pretend the rest never happened. A popular cut off point seems to be the end of the Bantam era, so up to and including Vision of the Future. So if we have everything up to that point having happened and then new stuff after it. I like this idea, because then we keep the kids and NONE of them die, Chewie also lives and we don't get the estrangement storyline. So basically the only bugbear will be COPL, which we will continue to believe never happened. ;)

And anyway, I can't believe that with a woman now at the helm of Lucasfilm that she would let something crappy happen, right girls?

      Delete
    6. Oh, I just want to be clear, it's not like I think they *will* split them up. I'm fairly sure they wouldn't, I just brought that up because I've heard that used as an argument for being in favor of them following the EU. I just found a lot of the storylines to be pretty "eh" in comparison to the original trilogy. So, that's why I feel like wiping the EU clean, would give them an opportunity to come up with a better storyline of what has been going on in the long years since we've last seen them. I mean, for all we know, up until the movies pick up, they could've had a pretty peaceful existence. Getting married, raising their kids, and living life. And wouldn't that even be better than all the nonstop struggles the books have put them through? I mean, even pro-EUers have gripes about Han and Leia never getting to spend time with each other or their kids. So wiping out the EU could get rid of all that. I don't know....I guess I just have greater faith in the movie makers to come up with better stuff.

Of course, with the way most of the prequels turned out, my faith could be misplaced. But I don't know. I have renewed optimism about this whole project.

      Delete
    7. No worries. And of course you make a very valid point. If of course they scrap the EU and establish that Han and Leia have lived a peaceful existence with their kids and no wars and no threats and no Prince Fabio, then of course I'll take it! I do like the idea that there have been no wars and they've just had 40 years of wedded bliss. I think it would be pretty awesome if Han and Leia produced ALL the kids to populate Luke's Jedi Academy and also had one or two that were non Force sensitive along the way.

      Delete
    8. I'm with the let's gamble on the new devil and ditch the old one. I would be perfectly fine if they threw the EU out altogether. I'm not worried about them not being married, I don't think that would happen. I'd like to see what some other writers might come up with for them since I'm not really happy with what all those EU writers came up with.

I think it would be really nice if they had been enjoying a long episode of peace so that it felt as though they had accomplished something at the culmination of Episode VI. The way the EU is, if I was Leia, I would really wonder if it was all worth it because they never got a moment's peace.

So the movie picks up now and their kids have never seen fighting and war and Han and Leia have to 'dust off' their blasters and get to work? I could buy into that...

      IDK, that's my opinion.

      Delete
    9. Well, if we just get to pick what happens then of course I'd love it if they spent the last 40 years just being normal people, hanging out, raising their kids while Luke started the Jedi Temple and trained a new generation of Jedi for a conflict that hasn't happened yet. I just don't know if they'd do that.

      Delete
    10. I just don't think anything they would do would be worse than what we have. That's just my gut. And I didn't say anything they 'could' do. Because I know there is far worse. (They break up. Han cheats. What-have-you) I said what they 'would' do. I just don't see them dismantling them as a couple, so yeah, I'd like to see how someone else would put them together. I don't think it could be worse and even if it is EQUALLY horrible, at least it would be a change of scenery. -OR- It could be measurably better... I vote for: REINVENT. Did we do a poll on this already? I smell a new poll topic.

  3. I'm getting more excited. How could I not be with more SW on the way. I have to vote for respecting the EU though. I may not like it, but at least I know Han and Leia will be together. They did look ready to bu a house in ROTJ so the odds still might be good. I really would like to see them together and happily married.

I saw all those on google reader, Zyra. Ugh! Thanks for looking out for us.

  4. I think the New Republic will be a strong trilogy, if the rumor mill has it even half right :)

    ReplyDelete
  5. I am very excited about the entire thing too! I can completely see the two of them as a married couple, and I'm just waiting to see how the entire thing progresses. Although I did say to one of my friends last night that if they kill Han off I'll buy the movies, burn them, kick the ashes around and then burn the grass they sit on. No, I don't have problems.

But either way, I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be able to wait two more years...but I am excited as this is the first Star Wars production I will have followed from start to finish. I can tell my kids someday "I remember the day they announced three new Star Wars films!" It's just really exciting for me since I'm just over a year fan of the films and it will be awesome to see the entire production! =)

  6. When I told my granddaughter that the new movie would be out in 2015, she said, but I'll be 8! I said, well, honey, I'll be 59. She said, you're gonna be a real oldie, Nana!

I think part of the reason I'm having so much fun with this is because I get to relive my misspent youth :)

  7. BTW, George Lucas has all but confirmed that they had signed Mark, Carrie and Harrison BEFORE the sale to Disney. From this article, published today, about the Disney acquisition of LF. http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-03-07/how-disney-bought-lucasfilm-and-its-plans-for-star-wars

    1. Very interesting!

But I'm not that surprised. Surely they would need the Big 3 on board BEFORE they even start working on the story. After all, it would be pretty silly to write it and then Harrison doesn't want to do it. I imagine they had to secure this before it even got off the ground.

      Delete
    2. I keep seeing George says comments, not just here, everywhere. How much is he involved? I thought he sold it to wash his hands of the lot of us.

      Delete
    3. Lucas has written the story treatments that Michael Arndt is turning into a screenplay, so technically Lucas has the same level of involvement as he did on ESB, where he wrote the treatments, but not the screenplay. So at the end of the day, it's still Lucas' story but he's just not involved in the film making side of it.

      Delete
    4. Ugh. Now I'm less optimistic. I lost any faith in Lucas's later storytelling ability with ROTS.
BTW from and earlier comment, having a woman at the helm is hardly reassuring. See Marissa Mayer or Sheryl Sandberg. Or in pop culture, Brave. A woman wrote that story before they actioned it up. Best female characters and epic tale in current mainstream are George RR Martin's from A Song of Ice and Fire.

  8. Just to get this out of the way: the Anchorman II news is awesome!! I love that movie and this news just makes me more excited to see the second one.

And on the EU, I'm on my first read of the NJO and Legacy era novels. NJO was OK, but I've got to say I really enjoyed the Swarm War trilogy, and having just finished Betrayal, I'll say they seem to be setting up some interesting ideas. I'm always up for good angst! =)

One of the coolest things about this universe is its willingness to allow several layers of cannon. Wouldn't it be strange to have one EU cannon from two decades of publishing, and then have an altered universe for eps VII, VIII and IX? All this speculation makes me want to pull out the "Infinities" graphic novel series and the "Tales" comics...

  9. Is there anyone out there who gets as pissed as I do about the fact that in the EU, both of Han and Leia's sons are killed? One I almost understand (almost), but two? Please. That has a habit of turning me off. I nearly lost my own kid in her teens and early twenties, and at times, I still have moments where I reel from it. (She's now alive and doing very well, but it was a long journey there.)

    1. Oh, I'm pretty sure we all do. It is beyond awful to take two children away from even fictional characters. And it makes me even more upset that they didn't even make the deaths particularly meaningful. Rumors are that Anakin died because they decided that people were too stupid and would get confused between Anakin Solo and Anakin Skywalker. So, first you make us mad with the ridiculous idea that Leia would name her child after Vader, then you spend a lot of time playing up how powerful he is in the Force and setting up that he will later do something great to redeem the name, then you up and kill him for no reason. Total waste. And the whole thing with Jacen was maddening on so many levels and ultimately also pointless.

So, yes, it makes me VERY mad. I also feel bad for Luke that they took his wife away, also for stupid reasons. Ultimately this is a fairy tale, and maybe it's not "realistic" that all of the main characters survive everything, but I don't read it for realism!

      Delete
    2. Plus Anakin's death totally negates Chewie's sacrifice. He died to save him but it was all a total waste of time when Anakin himself dies like 3 books later! And yes, it was Lucas that ordered Anakin's death, because apparently SW fans are extraordinarily dense and can't cope with more than one Anakin even though they are generations apart! See, Leia really should have choosen a better name!

      Delete
    3. Oh I so agree. Stupid to name him Anakin, and then even more stupid to decide that SW fans can't tell the difference between Anakin Skywalker and Anakin Solo.

Even worse was the Jacen thing. For the life of me, I don't understand how we're supposed to believe that even his own family decided there was nothing about him that could be redeemed and he'd have to be killed. I'll never understand that. Luke could find good in Darth Vader, who killed how many and wreaked havoc in the galaxy for decades, but Darth Caedus/Jacen Solo is a lost cause? Makes no sense to me.

    4. This "2/3 of kids dead" thing certainly adds a different perspective to the character's arcs. Didn't Lucas say at one time that, as far as he was concerned, the characters in the OT live "happily ever after" post-ROTJ? Not so much if you read the EU!

Just imagine Leia's perspective at the age of 60, looking back on her life. The events of the OT almost seem like small potatoes compared to the later tragedies of her life! (Except that whole Alderaan blowing up thing.) Not only has she lost 2 kids violently at a very young age, but the government she helped build has collapsed into totally ineffective chaos. Does she wonder what she fought for in the first place?

Hmm, must go read some Angst!fic now. Any recommendations? =)

      Delete
    5. Exactly. You look at those happy faces at the end of ROTJ and it seems wrong to assume anyhting aside from "happily ever after." Now, happily ever after doesn't sell books. I get that. I think that the Bantam era did a good job of creating conflict without going overboard and basically making it pointless for them to have defeated the Empire and not died in the war. Seriously, would they have been better off considering the terrible things they went through? And please don't try and justify it by saying that their great-grandchild or something is the one who ultimately is able to right things or whatever, because that's just a little too far-fetched.

So, yeah, now I feel like I'd prefer to see the EU turned AU and just have them picking up after long and far less exciting lives in which they've never had to watch their children die or turn to the dark side.

Still makes me afraid of what they COULD do though.

      Delete
    6. The whole thing with the boys dying just pisses me off. I don't understand to need to kill off both of them. krtmd, that is such a good point. They could find something to redeem in Vader, but not Jacen? Really? That doesn't make much sense either. I've often wonder that myself if Leia asked herself if it was worth it all? And certainly no one was thanking her for the work she did.

What books does the Bantam era run through? Just curious.

      Delete
    7. Bantam era ended just before the first book in NJO, so Hand of Thrawn dulology were the last 2 books.

      Delete
    8. Ok, thanks. Goodness, that is when it all went to crap didn't it? Well, one might say COPL was crap, but I digress.

  10. I suspect that it would displease people, but I'd like to think Han and Leia had one non Force sensitive kid. Were it up to me, I'd have named Anakin something else.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I would LOVE for them to have a non Force Sensitive child. I'm not big on all the Jedi stuff, and poor Han, I feel like he needs someone on "his side", you know? It must be tough when your entire family have The Force.

I was going to say Leia should have named her son Bail, but I guess that wouldn't have worked either:-

LUCAS "Oh we have Bail Organa AND Bail Solo, that's going to be really confusing. Ok, Bail Solo has to die!"

      ;)

      Delete
    2. I'm going to go all non EU and make their third child non Force sensitive. Because I can :)

      Delete
  11. As for the fall of the New Republic, that's another thing that pisses me off. It's very realistic to see it threatened, and that is something that I readily accept. But to see it fall? It's like US democracy, meaning it's a difficult idea and hard to hold together, but I'd like to see it prevail.

    Maybe I'll write about that.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Now I've gotta think of a name for the third and non Force sensitive child. Suggestions?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Shimi. If we are using family names, that is. Or create a name for Leia's favorite place or thing on Alderaan.
And you tell me when you write that New Republic fic. Threatened, of course. Fall? Only if our heroes are completely incompetent and/or start to try and control everything the way the Empire did. Then it just breaks into smaller Republics, some of which fare better than others.

  13. I was thinking about this last night, and if they do pick up where the state of the current EU is (i.e., Jaina and Allana alive, etc.) can you imagine the beginning scroll to explain all the stuff that has happened to our favorite characters? Or the massive flashback sequences to explain how we are where we are? I mean when you think about the totality of the EU for the big 3 it is pretty fouled up: OK, where to start, 4 years after ROTJ, Leia was in love with Han but mad at him so then she was going to marry this other guy, so Han kidnapped her. And it all worked out in the end and Han and Leia got married and had three kids. And then Luke after chasing a string of females finally marries the person who spent much of her time trying to kill him and they have a son. Then Chewie dies trying to save H/L's youngest, who then dies a few books later anyway. But wait, it gets better (worse?) as Han and Leia's son turns to the dark side and kills Luke's wife. Then Jaina has to kill her own brother and does. But her brother had a child, so here we are one child and one grandchild. And all the other crap that has happened. It's exhausting just to think that this much could happen to one albeit fictional family.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Tell me about it. I'd like to think that Han lies on the sofa all day Sunday and watches sports and Leia has time to get her nails done, and both of them just enjoying their kids.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Good point, okhotshot. The opening scroll will take 10 minutes alone. :) You think that people will be familiar with the EU? Or at least have a passing knowledge of it?

    1. Haa, good idea. He can spend one day on the couch but pretty much the rest of the week in bed with Leia! ;)

    2. Well, I'm sure he has to rest some time. ;)

They most certainly aren't are they? Well, except for the the fact that they did get married. At least we got that. Maybe they should have eloped after ROTJ instead. If they want to make the EU the AU, then I vote for that. :)

      Delete
    3. Oh, I'll make sure of that. I'm writing their wedding night as we speak.

      Delete
    4. Didn't Lucas film a wedding scene in the forest of Endor? I recall that from some interview a long time ago. I can't remember if he filmed it or just thought about filming it, but he had them married as soon as the Emperor died, which given their horrible histories, makes the most sense. Why would these two ever waste a moment of time together? People who have experience their losses, who delayed and almost lost each other, they aren't likely to date just to see if things are really right. They seize the day and deal with what comes thankful that they at least have sanctuary in each other. Wait and date for 4 years, my foot. The terrible COPL only did that because the writer assumed modern women sensibilities couldn't deal with a Leia who gets married at 22. And that's only the start of problems for that book.

      Delete
    5. The Endor wedding was never filmed. This was confirmed by Carrie herself at a show she did last year and was a question put to her by one of the members here. Whether it was something Lucas intended to do, I don't know. I'd like to think that was his original plan for the ending.

And I agree on COPL, as I'm sure we all do. They would not have waited 4 years and would not have married under those circumstances.

      Delete
    6. I hear that. No way wait for four years. And I have no trouble Leia would be married at 22. No sense in waiting.

  18. I'm also thinking that Jacen might do some dabbling in the Dark Side as a form of teenage rebellion, but that he grows up and develops some sense.

The crew is together, it seems, thank god. What would we do without them? I hope Carrie and Harrison keep the chemistry they had 30+ years ago.

Another thing that has been bothering me that is such a trifle that it irritates me is that how the heck are they gonna do Carrie's hair?! Cx I agree, claire, I don't think the buns were the most flattering wardrobe choice of her's.

  23. seriously. I just hope hope hope they don't screw this up. that will be worse than never having seen them together again. I could see Han being a bit more clean-cut, in a general's uniform or something, more like Harrison looks these days, or like the Ender's Game pics that have been released (with his normal hair, not the 42 red hair or paranoia shaved head!). Carrie has been looking good lately - I am thinking something classy, tending toward Hillary Clinton (texts from Hillary, anyone?) would do well for Leia.

I have slightly below shoulder length hair and when I'm in class, I don't want it in my face.

  25. Oiy, you were supposed to let me know when this went up! I'm way behind on my blog reading.

I'm with StonedRose, Claire1976, and Push: forget the EU. As mentioned, the flashbacks will be a problem, but mostly I've never liked the characters in the EU. They turned them all into typical modern people only set in a galaxy far, far, away. Leia is the typical working mom, only a diplomat, that sort of thing. With the exception of Death Star and Tatooine Ghost the EU authors didn't do a great job in plot or character really. They kept throwing in new baddies, because the formula needed baddies, new romantic tension, etc. They didn't seem to think through what would logically happen after the war and write those stories. They just kept finding Sith clones and other apocalypsi. That worked in Buffy where they lived on the Hell Mouth and waged constant battle against the first evil. But Star Wars is about one fight of good vs evil, Anakin's. The EU should have been about the rebuilding of the Old Republic and how Luke and Leia dealt with the knowledge of the power they had at their disposal and how to rebuild the Jedi Order now knowing what separation of the Jedi from the normal flow of life could do. We occasionally got hints of this, but mostly the stories stuck to the good guy vs bad guy with a romance on the side. Never did justice to the world or characters.

    1. I wholeheartedly agree. You should have written the EU, or at least give advice for Ep VII if they're ignoring the catastrophe that is the EU. Brava.

    2. If I'd known about fan fiction years ago, I just might have. Of course if my first draft, spiral bound, Luke and Leia story from my young days when I dotted 'i's with circles is any indication, I'd make a much better story advisor than writer. The prospect of writing dialogue frightens me. I'll keep reading Push and co.
Oh and I forgot the other day, Zyra and Push, where are you getting your info? Most of what I've seen about Fisher, Ford, and the EU says 'done deal.' I'm reading the news, though, not hanging out at the galactic watercooler these days. Scuttlebutt?

    3. Wamzilla, I see from your profile that you know what I mean about younger writing preserved in pixels. I'm very glad blogging wasn't an option when I was young. You have any blogs now?

I agree. There's enough stuff for at least one book about Leia's traumas and dealing with Vader being her father only. Now that I know, there's only a couple of mentions about her nightmares or something in EU...

    5. I've sworn off blogging for the time being, just happy to make sporadic comments to blogs that I fancy. I totally understand about dialogue, I don't trust myself to make any sense. Definitely happy to just read and leave it the pros ;)

You'd definitely make a good beta-reader, if anything!

    6. No! I lost my reply to Lily from earlier! I must not have entered the word right before I closed up to get the kids. So sum up of my really long comment:
There's enough stuff for a whole series on Leia. She was the one who never dealt with her father and she was the one most at risk to be like him. The EU lazily assumed Luke would be tempted, but he already resisted in face of his own painful death, death of his sister, best friend, and the entire Rebellion. If he refused the Dark Side under those circumstances, then no temptation could top that until he had children. Leia, however, did exactly what her father did. In the face of extreme loss, she cut herself off. Vader did so by just bowing to the will of the Emperor. She did so by embracing the whole Rebellion; if you love all of humanity, you needn't feel pain when only one suffers--for the greater good, and all. In the fan fic I've long had in my head, Han realized what she was doing--in the abstract before they knew about Vader and in fact after--that's why he stuck around and fought for her. She'd get lost in power if she remained separate. After ROTJ, Leia still has to consciously choose her path. Luke doesn't.
Shoot. My earlier comment was better, but I need to sign off now. Oh, one last thing, beta reading. I do some for the Voltron fandom. Writers either love or hate my cc. There's no middle ground.

  27. Stop whatever you are doing: inspired conspiracy video: Death Star was an inside job: http://www.blastr.com/2013-3-18/destruction-death-star-was-inside-job-weird-video
Someone should write that story. Loads of fun potential. (If someone has written this AU, please send link.)
