December 18th, 2015

(Please note that the above picture is merely a fan work, not an official poster)

Do you know what you're doing on December 18th, 2015?  I sure do!  Finally, an actual official bit of news when the release date was announced today.  Later than planned, but that gives them enough time to make sure it's really, really good.  Right?  RIGHT?

There are lots and lots of rumors floating around at this point and if you're like me, you're tired of speculation and you just want to know a few things about it so you know whether or not you need to be disappointed yet.  That said, I feel pretty confident that the "big three" will be returning.  Harrison spent the last week or so visiting just about every talk show there is to promote his new movie Ender's Game, and on most of them there were still ambiguous answers to whether or not he'd be returning.  There was a major rumor that he wanted to wait and make sure that Han had a good character arc and would be in all three movies, not just one.  And also that if he signs for this he is promised another turn as Indy.  Whether that all turns out to be true or not we'll still have to wait and see, but for now, at least we know exactly how long we have to wait.

  1. I know what I'll be doing. :) A bit later than I hoped, but I'd rather have them delay instead of rushing it so we can get something really good. I hope. I did hear that Lucasfilm had actually asked to postpone a year but Disney told them no. Maybe this was their compromise? I certainly would like to hear more official news about the story and cast.

Btw, did you hear Abrams and Kasdan took over the script? Maybe we're in good hands after all.

    1. I agree, I think the push back to December was a compromise with Disney. Lucasfilm wanted 2016 but Disney stomped their feet and said "it has to be 2015". So they've moved it to the furthest point they could without going into 2016. I see some fans are already up in arms that it's not coming out in May like the others have, and some are really angry about it. But honestly, does it REALLY matter that much? And if an extra 6 months gives us a much better movie then it's all worth it.

Yes, heard about Kasdan and Abrams taking over the writing. More Larry Kasdan can't be a bad thing :)

  2. A slightly belated 60th birthday present for me! (It's less than 2 weeks before.) A grand way to enter another decade!

  3. Yup... I'm gonna be at the movies!!! Hoping that Kasdan and Abrams can pull out a worthwhile story arc. I'm sure that Harrison is playing coy because he's currently got to promote Enders Game. Going to see that this weekend more because I loved the book than for Harrison but he doesn't hurt...

  4. BTW, has everyone heard about the open auditions being held this month for two lead roles? I have them in my city this weekend. It's a shame I'm like 20 years too old for the female role:(

And did you see those odd character bios they put on the casting call sheet? Clearly the names are fake, but I'm inclined to think the descriptions are too. A red herring methinks.

  5. I will be at the cinema with my brother, glaring at anyone who dares distract me from what's about to be shown. Can't wait!

    1. I'll be going with my bro, too. We grew up watching the movies, saw the prequels together (we would've gone to see the OT together I'm sure, but we were a combination of not born/way too little for each of their releases) so it's definitely necessary.

    2. Whenever my brother wants me to do a favour for him, but I say no- he reminds me that he was the one that got me into Star Wars. Never mind that I introduced him to roughly 20 more movies/tv shows that he is now obsessed with- the only one that seems to matter is Star Wars.
      And for good reason ;)

  6. I'm sure I'll be shunned from the community for this, but I probably won't go on the actual opening day. But who knows, maybe I'll take off work. Saw Ender's Game this weekend, thought it was so-so. And I can't see Harrison turning down Episode VII. He did Expendables 3 for heaven's sake to earn a few million. I'm sure they will make it worth his while to do Star Wars.

    1. 99% of the time I'm with you and I don't care about being the first person to see movies. This is the 1% where it VERY MUCH MATTERS TO ME! Depending on subject matter learned later, I may try and avoid knowing much at all about it or seeing too much so it's a surprise on the big day, and I'd like to see it and make my own judgment before the internet starts telling me I should hate it. Although, to be fair, Episode I came out before I used to spend so much time on the internet so it took me a few weeks before I realized I was allowed to hate it ;) But if it truly looks promising, I will be one of the first ones in line.

  7. We probably will not go opening night. It'll be crazy. But we won't delay long.

  8. Yeah, I usually don't care about seeing things when they open, but this is definitely one of the HUGE exceptions. I'll probably do a midnight show if I can swing it (I did that for Indy 4). I can't wait, but I don't mind waiting until December. As long as they get it right.

  9. So torn about whether to bother with opening day or midnight showing. May end up largely depending on what the kids are like then: they'll be... holy s***, they'll be six! Who knows what they'll be capable of then? Oh God, what if they're not into Star Wars anymore?? Off to have existential crisis...

    1. Oh, I should clarify that unless my internal clock makes some serious changes in the next 2 years, I won't be doing any midnight shows. Sorry, the idea seems cool and all, but I can barely stay awake UNTIL midnight let alone try and stay awake through a movie, even an awesome one, that starts then. I can deal with waiting an extra 12 hours.

    2. A midnight showing would be pretty awesome. Not sure how hard it'll be to get tickets. But I'll try to make it pretty soon after it opens. I won't be able to wait too long for sure.

At least at six you might be able to get them to sit through the movie. I waited until each of my kids was five before I took them to the movies. My son got a kick out Phantom Menace in 3D. Not so much Jurassic Park. Those dinosaurs were pretty crazy jumping out in 3D. The rest of us loved it, but not so much for him.

    3. I was 3 when I went to the theater to see ROTJ. And I sat through it with my preschool friend and I still remember it being awesome the first time :)

  10. I plan to do a midnight showing. I've never done one before, but I'd say this would be the perfect time to try it. ;)

I did see Ender's Game this weekend. I thought it was pretty good, nothing groundbreaking, but a fun sci-fi film and fairly true to the book. Harrison was awesome as Graff. A side note...his uniform kept making me think of the blue jacket. Heh...
