New Character Posters, Just Over Six Weeks to Go

Well, isn't that nice, huh? It reminds me how cool it is going to be when we start getting even more publicity stills and behind the scenes stuff to show us what we are not allowed to see until after the movie comes out. In a lot of ways this whole thing still doesn't quite seem real. An entire Star Wars movie with Han in it. And don't forget Leia:

Now, I'm going to have to state the obvious here, which is that someone did a little bit of digital fixing to Carrie's lips, but overall let's just look at these and be like, holy crap, Han and Leia in a movie! And let's remind ourselves that for those of us in the US seeing the movie at the first possible moment, we will be sitting in that theater a mere six weeks from tomorrow. Just let that sink in a little bit.

So, how is everyone doing at this point? For myself, I have completely abandoned any attempts at speculating what may or may not happen. That isn't even a conscious effort, it's just that it is so close at this point, I just want to SEE it finally, and let the movie speak for itself. Sure, I'm almost certain that amidst the wave of excitement that overwhelms me as I finally sit down in that theater on December 17th will also include a wave of terror as I wonder what they might have done to my favorite characters. But, I'm still very much looking forward to it.

Largely what I'm looking forward to is the once in a lifetime aspect of this. When is the last time you looked forward to a movie coming out anywhere near as much as this one? I like movies in general, I get excited when cool ones come out, but I am almost never a "first show on the first day" kind of person. Unless I just happen to be free and bored, that day, that is. Like, I think I actually saw Pitch Perfect 2 the day it came out, but that had more to do with boredom. Do you even remember the first time you saw Star Wars? I have no recollection of the first time I saw ANH or ESB. I have memories of watching them basically as far back as I have memories. I do remember the first time I saw ROTJ, though my only vivid memories of that are that it was really loud, and I thought it was pretty cool that Leia was under that Bousch mask. I was in preschool and already well enough versed in Star Wars to know the characters, but I wasn't like, emotionally invested in it.

I am very much emotionally invested in this movie. I care way too much about what may or may not happen to these characters. I mean, I love the Marvel movies, but I am not personally affected really by whatever happens to Iron Man and Black Widow and Captain America, even though I was admittedly kind of sad that he didn't get a chance to give things a shot with Agent Carter. (And as a complete side note: if you haven't, you guys should totally watch Agent Carter.)  Many of us have been waiting for this movie for over 33 years, while some of you lucky people have waited less if you didn't see them until later. That said, I'm sure even the rest of you have waited plenty. Most of the time we didn't even know we were waiting for it.

And now it's almost here. We get to see Han and Leia and Chewie (and maybe Luke, depending on where the heck he is hiding) on screen again together. And I'll tell you right here that I'm going to cry really regardless of what happens in the movie. It could probably be two hours of watching them wander around a desert and I'll still cry because OMG! Han and Leia! I don't want to know anything else about it until I actually get to see it.

Now as another side note: beware of Target. Holy crap to they have a lot of Star Wars merchandise. Just when I thought I had enough Star Wars t-shirts, they had to go and make Star Wars hoodies. There is even a fair selection of women's stuff for once. Honestly, half the time I think I'm in the 80s again. Star Wars is everywhere, Muppets are on TV, there is another Rocky sequel coming out and at this point I don't even know what number that is because I stopped watching after 4.

Anyway, mostly this was an excuse to post those gorgeous posters. And to warn you about spending all of your money at Target. Or online as there is also a Death Star waffle iron available currently. And to check in and see how everyone is doing so late in the game. It has been just over three years since this was announced and I can't believe it is almost here!

  1. We won't be seeing it at the first showing, but we are seeing it opening night and I'm really looking forward to it! Star Wars Fever is everywhere; even our campus is selling Star Wars T shirts (also emblazoned with our school's logo, and apparently all the Cal State campuses are carrying their own versions). It's like you can't get away from it. I'm hoping for a BB8 Christmas ornament.

    1. I won't buy anything BB-8 until I find out whether or not he is the new Jar Jar. I mean, I don't think he will be, but I just need to be sure.

    2. LOL I hadn't put it in those terms but that's exactly my attitude. I am not falling in love with any of these characters till I see the movie.

  2. Love the posters! Omg, our girl looks good. I'm there opening night. Hard to believe 6 weeks from now and trying to remember that's the only thing I'm doing that night! :)

Target is just dangerous at this point. I found a new Falcon shirt there in men's section. But it's super cute. And one of the Leia onesie pjs with hood. Sadly I look like an Ewok in it. But it's warm! :)

    1. The one that looks sort of like an early 80s concert t-shirt? Or the other one? Or the OTHER one? There are like 5 Falcon tshirts at Target now. I have been able to restrain myself from buying more Falcon tshirts as I already have 3. I saw the Leia onesie but luckily I can avoid that one. I think I'm too tall for it anyway, it can't possibly be long enough. And I start sweating just thinking about putting it on.

    2. I love the posters. The top Leia is wearing is definitely the one on the official poster. It looks like part of a dress. I'm getting excited...Han and Leia for the win.

    3. For a while I was thinking maybe her role wasn't that big, but more recent events would lead me to believe that she is pretty integral here, which makes me happy.

    4. Not sure which one it is. But it's black and has color diagram of Falcon. The onesie is pretty funny. I wore it for Halloween. My son was a First Order stormtrooper so it worked.

  4. Also, I just looked up those character posters and they have a few others. What's with covering their one eye?

    1. Yes, I forgot to mention there are other character posters. Because to me, for now, there are only 2 people in this movie ;)

  5. I should also mention, unshaven Han Solo. That is something we've never seen. Even throughout the entire OT when you'd think there were times when he wouldn't have been able to shave, like say when they spent the night in the Ewok village, he was still silky smooth the next day. Han is gonna go through some stuff in this one.

    1. Maybe Leia likes him scruffy. ;)

    2. Han must have been carrying a razor with him LOL. I like the slightly unshaved look.

    3. I keep going back to the Force Awakens page at starwars.com because the top story in the feed is about the posters and the lead photo is a tightly cropped version of scruffy Solo. oh my.

  6. Forget the digital touch-ups. No one is safe from those (seriously, when will they just STOP). I mean even Jennifer Lawrence gets photoshopped. It's really annoying.

Wait…where was I? I dunno. But Leia looks awesome. Han looks awesome. I am so ready for this movie!

    1. Oh, I'm not really complaining about the digital fixes. They used to retouch photos manually before they had all the computer stuff to fix it, we'd probably not even recognize most of these people in real life ;) (just kidding, of course) I just thought it was sort of funny considering legitimately one of my biggest concerns for this movie was what has been going on with Carrie's lips the last couple of years, and the fact that she never, ever shows her teeth anymore. But anyway... I do agree that they look awesome.

Another side note: have any of you watched Star Wars: Droid Tales? Yes it is totally a kids show on Disney XD, but it is also adorable and it has Threepio telling the story of the movies in flashback and is a pretty cute parody. When Leia says "I love you" and Han says, "I know" then Leia goes, "I know that you know," and Han replies, "I know that you know that I know..." and so on. It is super cute.

    2. Your teeth comment gave me a scare. I've noticed that too but never though much of it until I realized I'm not the only one. After a million horrible things passed through my head, I consulted google...

Teeth! Normal teeth! Recently photographed normal teeth! I think the closed mouth smirk is a pose preference related to wrinkles and crinkles around her mouth and eyes, but I'm of the opinion that her smile makes her appear more youthful, wrinkles and all.

      Delete
    3. Lol, thanks for doing that research. I wish she would go back to smiling normally instead of doing the pout thing, she always had a very nice smile. Maybe Han will make her smile in the movie, but I don't know, she's probably going to have to be sad the whole movie.

  7. Other unrelated but kind of sad news: Harrison's second wife, Melissa, died today. Apparently she had "an illness" but nothing so far says what. So that is very sad for their poor kids.

    ReplyDelete
  8. And some less sad news: did anyone see Harrison on Jimmy Kimmel last week? Dressed as a dog dressed as a hot dog? He seems to be having fun, and also seems like he is excited about the movie. Interesting to hear him talk about the plane crash too, and how he has no memory of any of it until 5 days later. Whenever I hear stuff like that it reminds me again of how close we came to losing him!

  9. The coat/shirt Han is wearing in the poster is the same one that's in the official poster, too.

  10. Which makes me believe/speculate that they are in a celebration scene wearing "dress clothing."

  11. Fab posters of Han and Leia. Looks like Leia is in some kind of command centre like the end of ANH during the X-wing attack on the Death Star. Could be a clue to her role in the film. And it does seem to indicate that as Leia is important enough to have her own poster then she has a vital role to play, not just a glorified cameo.

    Love scruffy Han ;)

  12. Great posters. I still have a hard time believing that in 6 weeks we'll see Han and Leia together again. I got my tickets for the 7pm show on December 17th (on my birthday thank you very much). I do remember as if it was yesterday when I fisrt saw Star Wars on the big screen (summer 1976) I was 6 and probably not as excited as I am today!

  13. Love me some scruffy nerf herder.

I didn't get to see Star Wars in the theater until after school started in the fall of '77. we moved that summer and money was tight. I remember all the people in line talking about how many times they'd seen it already.

    1. oops hit publish before I was done. we have tickets to the early show. we will all be dressed for the occasion, I may break down and cry when the lights go down and never stop. after all, seeing the trailer in the theater before Avengers had me in tears.

  14. The closer this gets the more excited, and the more NERVOUS, I get. My excitement at seeing Han and Leia again, hopefully together, trumps the possibility of a plot I won't like; if it's disappointing, once it's over the sadness will set in and then I'll be miserable. LOL I have to admit, it kind of breaks my heart a little seeing Han and Leia 'old'. I wish they had made this movie at least ten years ago.

Count me in also as one who wishes Carrie would smile more. Apparently she had her lip lines removed and it didn't turn out so well, so could be a self-conscious thing. Anyway, I just think she would look so much better if she did something to her hair and shined that beautiful smile more often. She's still a complete delight and sharp as a tack and here's hoping Leia is still that badass we all fell in love with.

    1. I'm trying to maintain just being more excited than nervous. Because along with the excitement currently there is still some level of hope about certain things. When we find out a lot of this stuff for sure, the hope will be gone. Granted, everything may be "fine" at least as far as the things we Han and Leia fans would most be concerned about, and that would be great. But I do think that after the excitement of just seeing them all again, and finally seeing this movie wore off, there will be this major crash of realization if some things are bad. Like if I have to accept that they never got married, or never had kids, or haven't seen each other for almost 30 years. That's going to be tough. I do also agree with you that 10 years ago would've been far better. Although the more footage of Harrison I see, the less concerned I am about his age, at least for now.

I think regardless of smiling or not smiling, Leia is totally going to be badass. How could she not be?

      Delete
    2. Oh yeah, totally! The smiling comment was mainly about Carrie, not Leia. She may not have too much to smile about in the movie, I'm afraid. Anyway, did you see there is an explanation for Sana in comic #11? I at least feel better about that - unless it has some significance to TFA - that makes me nervous.

      Delete
    3. I hope she has SOMETHING at some point to smile about. Although she didn't smile that much in the OT either.

I did see the explanation. I really, really doubt that it will have any significance at all to the movie. Really, they just aren't going to have a major plot point in a comic book, because the movie needs to reach such a wide audience and arguably a pretty small percentage of said audience is reading the comic books. And really, if we hadn't all had a zillion articles hit the internet being all like, Han was married to someone else! He was cheating on his wife with Leia! We probably all would've been able to keep our logical minds working and realize that comic books pull stunts like that to keep readers coming back, trying to tell us that these major things happened, but then a few issues later it all turns out to be nothing.

    4. I hope you're right because tying that in would be ridiculous. I just hate when they throw around words like "canon." I will say that the parting shot of H&L in Shattered Empire did make me hopeful, though.

Thanks for the conversation! I don't get to talk about these two much these days.

      Delete
    5. So, two questions. What was the explanation? Not sure if I heard anything specific on that? And what was the parting shot in Shattered Empire. I'm for anything that is hopeful. :)

      Delete
    6. Artanis, I think that was one of the reasons everyone went crazy about it, because it was one of the first things in the "new canon" and I think people were like, the new canon is going to change everything and it's all going to get crazy! But I suspect it will MOSTLY turn out to be like the old Marvel comics, which have some fun little stories but are overall fairly inconsequential to what we actually see in the movies. I'd still like to know what happened on Ord Mantell, though.

Amara, for the explanation it was that it was a staged fake wedding to serve as a distraction for some smuggling scheme. So Han says at this point, anyway. I believe that it isn't ENTIRELY resolved yet, but that seems to be the case as far as what happened. Though we are not sure yet why she still keeps referring to herself as Sana Solo, perhaps wishful thinking or she just likes to piss off the old smuggler, both highly plausible scenarios.

      Delete
    7. I've always been curious about Ord Mantell, too.

The parting shot in Shattered Empire was of them walking off together with Leia holding on to his arm. He had rushed off to Naboo to save her after he found out there was a chance she was in danger from an attack. It was sweet. It certainly gave the impression that post-Battle of Endor they were still together. Hopefully they won't retcon the entire OT.

      Delete
    8. Cool, thanks, Zyra. Was curious. And thanks, Artanis. That sounds really sweet. I'm still of the opinion that they looked ready to buy a house in Jedi. So they'd have to do a lot to break them up now and not completely destroy some of the OT in the process. Geez, I hope that doesn't depress everyone. It actually gives me hope they won't totally screw things up.

If it's not too spoilery, can I ask about some rumors I read recently? Mostly about who would be alive and not alive at end of episode 7? I wanted to check before posting the question.

      Delete
    9. I think Ord Mantell ranks right up there with what happened on way to Bespin in terms of mysteries. :)

      Delete
    10. Now at some point clearly I'm going to have to get Shattered Empire.

Amara is reading rumors? What? Um.... I don't know if I know how to answer that question. I guess maybe if we're still just kind of speculating? Like I have a very bad feeling that Han isn't going to make it, but I really don't know for sure, and I actually don't want to know either way before I see the movie. But I don't mind discussing the possibility. So, I guess maybe if we are just discussing hypotheticals, and not talking about stuff we read that was totally definite, then maybe we can talk about it? I do know that Harrison is on the cast list for Episode VIII, but that could easily just be to mislead people.

      Delete
    11. Agreed. I still like Infinities. The ESB one was really cool.

Lol, I know. Surely the apocalypse is coming next right? ;) I saw an article about Hayden possibly coming back for episode 8 and was curious. And then next thing I know they are discussing possible character death rumors in episode 7. Whoops. I'm with you that not sure I want to know before the movie but rumor is Han or Chewie won't make it. I really hope that is not the case. Not sure if I can stand it. But will have to wait to see.

      Delete
    12. Hayden? Really? I definitely hadn't seen that. I'd be reluctant to believe any of this yet, but damn, bringing back Vader? All at once that sounds like it could be both cool or just really lame. I suppose also though his Force ghost could come back to talk to Luke.

When this was all announced, even right away I thought Han would die, and I was ok with that. In fact I almost wanted it. Now that it is here, and I'm seeing him in these clips, I'm like, nooooooo! Don't kill Han!

      Delete
    13. I would rather Han die than for him to be apart from Leia. Is that bad?

      Delete
    14. It's not bad. And I agree with you.

      Delete
    15. Yeah, Hayden. I thought it very random, but interesting idea about Vader I guess.

Oh, I'm so with you. Seeing him now I'm like don't you dare do that! And not bad at all about Han and Leia. Apart is definitely not preferred. Of course I say this as looking at awesome blog background. :) Goodness they are too cute together back then.

      Delete
  15. Shattered Empire is good but be warned it is VERY light on the H/L front. It's a 4 part series and they are only shown together in the scene I mentioned. Leia isn't even in SE #1 and mostly Han is doing his thing and then Leia ends up doing her thing and finally he goes to find her when he's worried about her. I believe that was in #3 actually and they aren't even in #4. So just be wary. It may not be worth it for some fans.

And yes, the trip to Bespin will always be full of speculation. ;)
