May the Fourth Be With You!

Happy Star Wars Day!  If any of you were not aware, May the fourth is Star Wars day.  Why?  Well, just because May the fourth sounds like may the Force, get it?  Star Wars day and Cinco De Mayo back-to-back?  Awesome.  I knew we had posted something about it last year so I went back and looked at that old entry, which you can view here.  I had definitely not looked at that in a while and it's funny to see myself speculating what might be on the blu ray.  And I was right about the extra Han and Leia kiss!  I was wrong about my watching the prequels again, though, because I still haven't done that.  I will eventually, I swear.

What are you doing in honor of Star Wars day?  Did you know it existed?  To help out my fellow fans, if you were not aware, Target has some kind of cool Star Wars shirts in the men's graphic tees that are pretty cheap.  Old Navy also happens to have some in the men's department, although just yesterday I actually bought myself a boys' XL ESB t-shirt that fits perfectly.  So, some fun stuff if you're interested.

Another funny thing about that old post is that we only had five comments.  While I often give you guys a hard time lately about commenting, we have definitely come a long way since way back then.  And lately there has been a pretty bad lack of content so I really can't blame you.  But hopefully you will still come here to talk about all things Star Wars and specifically Han and Leia, of course.  I mean, look how cute they all are in that picture up there.

May the fourth be with you!

  1. I actually did not know about this, but sweet! I watched Empire yesterday. Does that count? Maybe I'll have to play some Star Wars kinect tonight.

Not sure I can get another shirt without the hubby having a conniption. I got two for my birthday and bought another this past weekend. It's a long sleeve, white boys shirt, but it fit and was 1.91. Yeah, still geeking out about it that price.

May the Fourth be with you!

  2. Yes, I knew about May the 4th, as I have a Star Wars obsessed teen and preteen in the house. I am wearing my favorite Her Universe t-shirt. The "I Know" shirt. Unfortunately they don't make it anymore, I would buy another for when this one is worn out. I'm thinking to celebrate the day is to blow off housework and mom stuff and read fanfics, novels, and write all day. It's a fantasy, but wouldn't that be awesome.
Congrats, on the bargain shopping Amara!!

  3. I'm putting on my Star Wars t-shirt, getting some popcorn and an energy drink (just in case) and I'm watching all 3 episodes (No, I don't count prequels :P I don't like them) and then any SW documentaries etc. etc. so it should be fun ^^

May the 4th be with you! :D

  4. Well, my daughter has been wanting to watch all 3 back to back. Probably a good day for it. No prequels (although my son likes those).

  5. They're having a big bar hopping deal tonight in my town where everyone dresses up in Star Wars costumes, but I'm bummed now because I'm going to be out of town. There's always next year.

But I'm sporting one of my SW shirts today, which I realized peering into my closet this morning, I have a disturbing amount of now. If they'd just stop coming out with awesome shirts, I wouldn't have to throw my money at Lucas. :P

  6. They even mentioned this on British breakfast tv this morning!

I wasn't planning on doing anything inparticular today, but now I'm thinking I should at least watch one of the films later on, which will most probably end up being ESB. All the recent flight to Bespin talk has got me in the mood for that. But then, I'm pretty much always in the mood for ESB.

I am wearing a SW t-shirt that has Artoo and Threepio wearing false moustaches and false noses, and it says "These aren't the droids you're looking for".

Zyra, I was just wondering, and I hate to ask.....will the book reviews and joint story be coming back sometime? :( I love them both.

And yes, they do look sooo cute on that pic. Shame that Luke has to be inbetween them. Can't he go and hug an Ewok or something?

    1. Lol on Luke hugging an Ewok.

    2. I'm the guilty party on the Joint Story and Book Reviews. I've been totally sucked into the real world lately and unable to dedicate any time to SW. I intend to try my best to continue both of those things, but right now it's not looking so, so good...

During this time I'm sure Zyra would appreciate anyone willing to do some guest reviews... :-)

    3. Sorry to hear that, Push. I can fully appreciate how real life can totally suck sometimes. I hope Darth Real-Life isn't being too mean to you

    4. Sorry to hear that too, Push. Hope things will get better for you soon.

And I'd love to know about the cookbook too.

    5. That explains it Push... Totally get the DRL thingy. As for May the Fourth... I didn't know but my teen boys did. Their choir at school is singing "John Williams He's the Man" at the concert tonight... in honor of SW. That and the James Bond theme. :D

    6. Push hang in there. It is terrible that we have to live in the real world sometimes. I keep trying to become independantly wealthy, but the lottery isn't paying off for me. We all understand. Just realize there is no pressure from any of us.

  7. Oh, and Happy Star Wars Day, everybody!

I didn't wear a SW shirt to work, but I'll slip one on when I get home. Promised the kids I'd make something out of our SW cookbook and watch a SW movie. I wonder which one?

    1. SW cookbook? Cool! What sort of things are in that?

      Delete
    2. Wellllll, this cookbook was given to me (with good intentions) from my clueless sister-in-law and it is the second SW cookbook to come out and has mostly Prequel stuff in it. The first book is (I think) exclusively OT recipes. But basically, they are very simple recipes with SW twists and names to them. Like Wookiee cookies (which is in the first book). I don't have mine with me, so I can't think of what mine has in it. I know the first one also had Han-burgers and Princess Leia cinnamon buns. Boba Fett-uccini and such. Don't expect gourmet, but the kids love it and they are kid-friendly (simple ingeredients, simple recipes) and easy to make.

  8. There are tons of Star Wars things on sale out there today if anyone is in the market for some merchandise. Especially comics for those of you who have recently been made aware of some of those. Not the Infinities ones though, as far as I can tell. Check out the list of sales on theforce.net although I warn you, I am trying very hard not to order things right now.

Just been reading that chapter from Scoundrels. Gotta love that line about Leia giving him "one of those looks". I'm sure we can all picture that.

    3. Thanks for the link JZ, just had a chance to read it. I love the line "There were, he decided, worse things than being on jabba's hit list." referring to "the look" from Leia. Funny. Timothy's book should be a fun read, can't wait.

    4. Just got this... hooray. Zahn is one of the few EU writers that does justice to H/L

    5. I like Zahn's writing, he has a great feel for the characters. I just get pissed off that he obviously has a problem with Han and Leia kissing. Because they don't!! Like ever.

Thankfully he's done, and continues to do some great books set between ANH and ESB, when of course we wouldn't expect them to be snogging anyway. So I'm happy with that, and looking forward to Scoundrels!

  10. I had no idea May fourth had such a prestigious designation. Wow.

Everyone May the forth be with you.

I dressed so inappropriate for such a holiday. I am sure my co-workers would have had a great time with it.

I will be around more this weekend. Been a very busy couple of days. Good news is my son got an internship this summer. Woo Hoo. Means he won't be home this summer, but something good on the old resume and after graduation job opportunities.

  11. Congrats to your son, IndyLis!

You know what, even the Mayor of London, in his re-election speech last night said "may the fourth be with you", which I thought was pretty funny!

So I watched ESB, even all the Luke and Yoda bits.

    1. I so wanted to fast forward during those sections last night. Watching Return today so my little guy can watch with us. I think he likes the Ewoks.

    2. I started to watch A New Hope yesterday, got as far as the cantina scene before having to go about real life as well. I'm mesmerized by the quality of HD and Blueray. Han's even more handsome in HD and I think i spied freckles along side of Leia's nose, how cute. Congrats as well to your son Indylis.

    3. I've very rarely fast forwarded the Yoda parts... but it doesn't mean I actually pay attention. I do recall an evening with friends where we had talked about watching it and then it was getting late and I was like, "We could juts watch the Han and Leia parts." Definitely cut down on the run time. Same thing another night in college, me and another friend, a Harrison fan, went to watch it in some other people's room and we knew it was getting late and I suggested we only stay until Han got frozen in carbonite.

As for picture quality, yes, Han looks amazing. I will say though I do hope we've reached the limit in picture quality because you can actually start to make out the foundation on Carrie's face and I don't think things need to be any clearer! Also, Push pointed out that some of those matte painting backgrounds don't look as realistic when they're not grainy.

      Delete
  12. I actually think ANH has the best HD picture quality out of the original trilogy blurays, yet its the oldest film! ESB and ROTJ just don't look quite as crisp in my opinion.

Yes, Han is even more gorgeous in HD! :D

  13. I usually reserve the Luke and Yoda parts for getting a drink, or taking a trip to the bathroom. The Luke bit I hate most is when he goes to "the cave", I have no idea why. I do like Yoda getting the x-wing out of the swamp though.

I agree about Carrie's make-up. Especially in ROTJ. I've always hated her make-up in that, particularly in the Ewok dress. Always thought she looked awful on the bridge talking to Luke. She now looks even worse thanks to HD.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah, ROTJ was... not her best look. Cocaine probably had something to do with it. I guess the same could be said for any of them, though, minus the cocaine excuse. I mean, how does someone appear to put on weight when in carbonite for six months without access to food or water? Maybe there was swelling involved.

      Delete
    2. Swelling?? I won't tell you what I thought if when you said that. (Removes mind from gutter) I have just been reading 40 Days to Bespin though :)

I thought Carrie looked great in the bikini scenes (make-up and hair wise) but it goes rapidly down hill once they get to Endor. The eye make-up and blusher just looks dreadful. Yeah, I think maybe the drugs didn't help matters, and she was also a lot thinner, which could also be drugs related.

      Delete
    3. Not that kind of swelling! Maybe I should've said bloating.

I think the being thinner was because George had shown her what she would be wearing for Jabba. I remember her saying somewhere that he showed it to her she was sure to "scare me into exercising." And I think I read somewhere else that they did a fitting for it a month or so before to get it all customized and whatever, and then when it came time to shoot she seemed like 10 pounds lighter. Probably also why it didn't quite adhere to her and exposed more than she wanted it to at times. Can't really blame her, I'd probably give up food for a month if I was going to be immortalized on screen in an outfit like that, too.

      Delete
    4. I heard that too about when she was shown a photo of the costume. She's also said that she was sure you could see all the way down to Florida in that thing. Apparently the guy playing Fett is the person to ask about that.

      Delete
    5. Don't worry Zyra, I knew exactly what you really meant!

Thought I remembered something about her losing weight for the bikini. Hadn't heard the one about Fett getting an eyeful though.

      Delete
  14. Her make up in ROTJ was pretty awful, and make up is usually the last thing on my mind. But I think part of it is lighting. That movie, in my opinion, has the worst lighting. One scene that I really notice it on is when they're all inside the imperial ship...actually, even before they board it.

Sometimes I enjoy the Yoda parts, but other times I use them as breaks. But I never skip them because I feel like it'll mess up the flow of the movie.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I always get groggy during the Luke parts. But do love that scene with the X-Wing. Such a nice visual of the ship gliding towards land and Luke in the background. The HD is good, but hope it doesn't get too much better. Don't really need to see their pores THAT well.

Her makeup at the Ewok village is bad. Did not like her look there at all. She looked so old.

Did notice a couple of other things watching ESB on and reading Scoundrels. Anyone else notice how everyone calls Han sir when addressing him at the base? It makes me wonder when exactly did he join up. I know Jedi made us believe it was then, or it did for me, but EU books have said it's sooner than that. He just seems so tight with the rebels at the beginning of Empire.

And love how Han and Leia balance each other out. She seems like such a planner and tactician, but I wouldn't trust her to do something completely stupid and dangerous for the Rebellion without Han around to stop her. She'd give her life I'm sure. And he thinks so fast on his feet. Real good at it. He has a sense of self preservation that Leia doesn't seem to have. But he likes to fly by the seat of his pants too and at least she gives him someone else to think about before doing something completely hair brained. Maybe both of them get the other to stop and think about things first.

Did anyone else read the blog on bn.com for Star Wars day? Thought it was interesting that Christie Golden is new to SW and sounds like she used to write SW fanfic. Thought that was neat.

    1. When he joins up confuses me. I thought he wasn't "official" in ESB. But if you read Choices of One (which you should) he joins up at the end of that book. I suppose that doesn't mean he couldn't have unenlisted between the book and the movie, but still.

I had no idea about that blog. Maybe I'll have to go check that out. Another old fanfic writer is now a bigwig editor for Star Wars books. Yes, you can turn your passion into your job if you really want to.

      Delete
  16. See I always assumed he was official in ESB because Rieekan refers to him as Captain. Yeah, I know he's Captain of the Falcon, but I thought maybe he'd actually been given the rank of Captain. I have been wondering if the Alliance insignia on his Hoth suit is actually a Captain's one. Does anyone geekier than me know much about the insignias on their outfits?

Yes, he does join in Choices of One, which would certainly fit with the above. It is a great book by the way, Amara.

Zyra, the blog that Amara mentioned is in the same link as the Scoundrels excerpt that JZ provided earlier. It's the bottom one that mentions Fate of The Jedi.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm sure I'll make it to that book at some point.

May have to check out ESB book to see what it says, but he was certainly part of the group at the beginning of the movie.

  18. My husband informed me that yesterday was Revenge of the Fifth day which I thought was stretching it a bit. We watched Revenge of the Sith and the only good part was my 12 year old daughter feeding me sarcastic comments throughout.

None of the prequel movies improve with multiple viewings, in case you were wondering.

    1. Ha,ha Revenge of the Fifth, sounds like something to do with a hangover:)

    2. I take it your daughter wasn't impressed either then, JZ?

For a time I did quite like Revenge of the Sith, I mean not anywhere as much as the OT, but it was the best of a bad bunch. However, I watched earlier this year and I thought it was bloody awful, and I cringed at the crappy dialogue and the whole ridiculous Anakin and Padme thing. Urghh. My biggest problem with the prequels is how Anakin is just so unlikeable and so far removed from the heroic, noble warrior that I always imagined him to be. I also hate that he fell to the dark side because he got obsessed with a woman, how pathetic is that? It basically turns Vader into a great big pansy, and I think that's insulting to the character.

      Delete
    3. Lol. Watching ESB, I just can't believe whiny Anakin turned into the bad ass that is Vader. It was a disservice that he fell to the dark side over her. I enjoyed the book for the movie at the time. I remember it going a little bit more into why he fell and the emotions behind it.

  19. I so need to stop stalking Tim Zahn's Facebook page in the hopes of a peep about Scoundrels.

Because I absolutely did not need to know that Tim, along with Aaron Allston and Mike Stackpole, will be spending an entire day talking about writing at this geek-fest just up the road from me.

  20. amara, I never managed to read any of the prequel books but maybe I should, so I can picture Anakin my own way.

My daughter's comment was that of course he's a whiny spoiled brat. where do you think Luke gets it from?

    Replies
    1. LOL! I totally agree with her. I'm just really glad Leia didn't get any of her dad's characteristics.

      Delete
    2. Well, you could argue that Leia is quick to argue and has a short fuse, that's similar to Anakin. But to be honest, each time I've watched the prequels I just never think of Anakin as being related to Leia. My brain just doesn't seem to connect with that. To me he's just some annoying, arrogant kid that is nothing to do with the OT. Half the time I don't even remember he's Luke's dad. Same with Padme. It's probably my subconscious mind telling me that these two pathetic excuses for characters are just not good enough to be connected to my beloved OT.
