Happy Birthday, Carrie Fisher!

For those of you who are not aware (and I actually was not until I went on Twitter this morning) today is Carrie Fisher's birthday. And not just any birthday, but today she is sixty years old. Really pretty hard to believe that the 19-year-old from Star Wars is now sixty. I'd say I've aged the same number of years over the same amount of time but I was not yet in existence in 1977 ;)

The woman has been through a whole lot, and it is probably somewhat miraculous that she is even still here with us to celebrate this birthday. But I'm glad she is. Beyond just being the absolute perfect casting choice for Princess Leia (do you ever wonder if you'd love Han and Leia so much if they weren't Harrison and Carrie? Because I sure do) she is one of the wittiest and funniest people out there. She also has the coolest dog in the entire canine community. I hope she sticks around with us for a long time, keeps on being the custodian of Princess Leia and protecting her sanctity but while also having a sense of humor about it. Like joking about how Leia divorced Han because he didn't take her to hyperspace enough. (we all know he did it plenty, I can definitely laugh at that joke)  I'm just sorry that they brought her back only to make her hopelessly tragic and sad. Which is not at all her fault.

So, happy birthday, Carrie. And maybe next time you two see each other you can get a birthday kiss from Harrison.

  1. Great post. Yep, it is amazing about it being almost 40 years later. And I WAS alive in 1976...And 1975...And 1974, etc. I remember going to the theater with my mom and uncle to see Star Wars in 1977 (missed the 1st 30 mins., though).

A lot of people comment on Carrie's acting in the films, but if you watch the audition tapes on You Tube, you can see how hard of a part it was to audition for and play. She truly was the best one for the role. It's hard to play Leia without being "mushy" or too soft.

Best wishes for good Han/Leia canon stuff upcoming. I always must remain optimistic. :)

    1. Koalas, you took the words out of my mouth (fingers!). I was going to mention the YouTube audition posts but you beat me to it. I was very unimpressed with Cindy Williams and Terri Nunn. Cindy wasn't terrible but she was not regal enough.Plus, Leia needs to be beautiful and sexy, a hard thing to pull off, and Cindy was never more than cute. Terri was just pallid.
Anyway, enough of them. Happy Birthday to the multi-talented Carrie Fisher, who was a part of my childhood, hero to me and fantasy girlfriend to my brother. haha How many boys in the 70s and 80s probably felt the same way?
I need to register an account here.

  2. Happy Birthday Carrie! I can't believe she's 60, where have all those years gone? Makes me feel old myself! I'm sure she'll be having one hell of a party today. Shame we aren't invited :( Can you imagine how awesome Carrie's parties would be?

    1. Oh, wow. Yeah, I think Carrie's parties would probably be too "awesome" for me to handle, lol.

  3. Happy birthday to her, but man is this all making me feel old, as I was old enough to see the original on the big screen in 1977. I'd go on over to twitter to wish her a HBD, but it creeps me out how people over there call celebrities they like "Mom," so I'll stay right there. :)

    1. Agreed, I do not understand this either. And it is creepy.

    2. Yeah, that's weird. I'm a little too close to Carrie's age to call her "space mom" like the Twitter brigades do.

Oh my giddy aunt. As soon as I wrote that I realised something: I have only thirteen years until I turn 60 myself. What? Somehow 47 didn't seem THAT old until I put it to myself that way. And now I can't NOT think of it.

Gah. What am I doing with my life!? I haven't even decided what I want to be when I grow up! *sobs*

    3. I can sympathise Erin. I turned 40 this year, and in twenty years I'll be 60, and it seems like only yesterday I was 20, so those twenty years will be gone in the blink of an eye. It's true what they say, the years seem to fly by as you get older. A sobering thought.

  4. Happy birthday, Carrie! I think I rememeber watching her audition, too, and it was great! I can't imagine anyone else playing out favorite petite powerhouse princess!
